will showcase how such challenges can be addressed through “Innovative
Design and Construction of Composite Steel-Concrete Structures”.

Accompanied by the book launch on “Design of High Strength Steel

Reinforced Concrete (SRC) Columns – A Eurocode 4 Approach” by
Professor Chiew Sing Ping and launch of the TTJ Design Handbook on
HISTEEL, this technical seminar will highlight how more innovative
composite steel-concrete structures can be designed using higher strength
S690 steel, GR600 rebars and C90/105 concrete materials.

Join us at this half-day Civil Engineering Technical Seminar where you will
hear from prominent industry speakers from the Building and
Construction Authority, leading consultant, contractor and specialist
supplier sharing their experiences on a range of interesting topics on latest
regulatory requirements, case study, innovative design, as well as
construction and welding issues.

Keynote Address: Innovation, Productivity and Safety in

Composite Construction

The keynote address will outline how BCA has been facilitating
innovation and improving productivity in composite construction.
Examples of projects successfully implementing innovative design
and high productivity composite construction technologies will be
shared. The keynote address will also highlight how BCA is going to
standardise the execution of steelwork to maintain high safety
level for composite construction.

Technical Presentation 1: Case Study - Funan Mall

Redevelopment Project

The new Funan will include a six-storey retail mall, two six-storey
office towers and one nine-storey tower of apartment units. The
presentation will cover the project overview, the reasons why
composite steel-concrete structures were selected for its framing
system as well as foundation system using steel kingposts for its
top-down construction with 4 basements, including the design and
construction of a very complex ‘Tree-of-Life’ structure within the
new development.

Technical Presentation 2: What are the Benefits of HISTEEL?

HISTEEL460 and HISTEEL690 are welded sections built up from

S460M and S690Q steel plates. The presentation will cover the
quality and control regimes which are absolutely necessary for
welding and fabricating these sections from high TMCP and Q&T

steel plates. The weight and size benefits from using such high
strength steel sections for applications as beams and columns will
be illustrated using the load capacity tables from the design
handbook on HISTEEL.

Technical Presentation 3: High Performance SRC Structural

Framing System for Heavy Industrial Buildings

A new design method is proposed to utilise the full strength of the

high-performance steel grade up to S690 and concrete grade up to
C90 for the SRC columns, taking advantage of lateral confinement
and strain compatibility. The same high-performance steel and
concrete grades can be used to form SRC beams and together,
they formed a new innovative SRC structural framing system which
will be very suitable for heavy industrial buildings. The key
advantage of using such high-performance materials is to reduce
the size of the structural elements considerably especially for the
SRC columns, thereby freeing up valuable floor space as well as
promoting safer and more productive construction.
