Thermal Cameras

THE 24-Hour Signal

Detection & ITS Solution
Thermal Cameras:
Because Heat Doesn’t Lie
Thermal cameras outperform other detection technologies by detecting the heat signatures given off
by everything in their field of view, 24/7. Because they see heat, not light, they don’t get confused
by sun glare, darkness, headlights, shadows, wet streets, and poor weather conditions like video
cameras do.
Detection systems using thermal cameras have dramatically fewer false and missed calls, enable
better signal timing, and more efficient traffic flow with increased safety than any other technology. Plus
thermal cameras also detect the heat from cyclists, pedestrians, and animals faster and more reliably.
A drop-in replacement for legacy video cameras, FLIR FC-Series thermal cameras run off 110/220
VAC power, output industry-standard video signals, and work with third-party video detection systems,
making them the most accurate, cost-effective solution on the market today.
FLIR thermal cameras are direct replacements for your legacy video cameras and work with your
existing processor, so you can get more accurate detection, improved data collection, and safer
operations without having to change the rest of your system or spend money training your operators on
a new system.

VISIBLE THERMAL

The Best Way to Control Traffic Signals
Standard video cameras are plagued by lots of imaging challenges – sun glare, shadows, wet streets – all of which can
confuse the video detection software that controls the lights and cause endless false calls and missed calls.
FLIR’s high-performance thermal cameras solve many of these imaging challenges, giving you uninterrupted 24-hour
detection of motorized vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians regardless of the amount of light available.
Because they can see clearly regardless of lighting or weather conditions, Thermal Signal Control cameras are an
efficient, cost-effective way to improve traffic flow, automatically determine traffic volume, and control signals.

Uninterrupted Roadway Monitoring

ITS Roadway Monitoring cameras need to give you clear information about what’s happening on your roadways, and FLIR’s
thermal cameras for Roadway Monitoring do just that. By coupling thermal and visible-light imaging in a single rugged
pan/tilt system, you get complete roadway video coverage you can monitor in real time over the internet.
Because thermal cameras can see clearly 24/7 they make video surveillance of roadways for Intelligent Transportation
Systems more effective and more efficient.
And, because they see farther in complete darkness, you can reduce pole and infrastructure costs. Thermal cameras
let you do more for less.
Use FLIR’s thermal cameras for:
• Incident Detection
• Traffic Flow Monitoring
• Tunnel Safety
• Animal Warning Systems
• Data Collection
• Bicycle Detection
• Pedestrian Detection
• Construction Safety & Liability
• Wrong-Way Driver Detection
The Power of Thermal
Thermal solves these problems….
Thermal cameras give your traffic control and monitoring systems the power to operate more precisely
and reliably night and day by detecting heat signatures, not light. This means you can see clearly through
all of these common imaging challenges.

Sun Glare VISIBLE THERMAL

Glare from the sun – whether it’s shining

directly into the camera or reflecting off wet
roads – blinds conventional video cameras,
effectively hiding vehicles, people, and animals.
Thermal cameras ignore this glare, and only
respond to the heat signatures they detect.

Headlights
At night, the headlights from cars and VISIBLE THERMAL
truck prove just as confusing to video
cameras as sun glare, hiding some traffic
and making processors think vehicles are
there when they’re not. This causes false
and missed calls at stop bars and makes
accurate observation of highway traffic
at night virtually impossible. Thermal
cameras are immune to headlight glare,
so they see clearly.

See Below Overpasses VISIBLE THERMAL

The dark areas under overpasses are

problematic for standard video cameras. In
fact, it’s often the hardest place for them
to cover effectively. Not so with thermal.
Thermal cameras see through the bright sun
and into the deepest shadows.

See Through Shadows VISIBLE THERMAL

Video cameras can miss pedestrians,

cyclists, animals, and even cars if they’re in
the shadows. But since thermal cameras
see heat, not light, there are no shadows
in a thermal world. Heat can’t hide from a
thermal camera, no matter where it is.

See Through Snow

Nothing can blind a video camera faster SNOW
than snow, but thermal detects cars reliably
regardless of outside temperature and in a
wide variety of weather conditions.

Long-Range ITS Viewing

At night, a highway looks like an indistinct
row of lights to a video camera, making
meaningful data collection and incident
assessment impossible. But thermal
cameras see the heat signatures of
vehicles clearly from miles away, even
at night, and also provide clear video of
the roadsides for awareness of parked
vehicles or other hazards.
Specialized versions of the FLIR PT-Series
that can provide accurate non-contact
measurements of roadway temperature

Cameras for Signal Control

FLIR’s thermal Signal Control cameras provide a video signal designed to get the most out of industry
standard analytics packages, so you’ll have traffic flow with the lowest possible rates of false, missed, or
dropped calls 24/7. What’s more, with thermal cameras your detection system can trigger earlier during
darkness giving you more efficient traffic flow.

“The very close alignment of the day and night activation times of the FLIR thermal sensor … suggest that these sensors
have the potential to substantially improve the operational efficiency of signalized intersections during nighttime operation,
a period when traditional video sensors often introduce up to 1 second of additional gap extension time from the headlight
projections … .”
Darcy Bullock, Ph.D., Director of the Joint Transportation Research Program, Purdue University

Easy to Install and Integrate
Thermal cameras are drop-in replacements for many existing visible-light cameras,
with robust imaging performance that you have to see to believe.
Thermal cameras are:
• Easy to Install – They use much of the same mechanical
hardware, mounting arms, cabling, and processors that you
already have. FC-Series cameras also provide dual methods
of video output connectivity – BNC and Connector-Less.
Connector-Less installation eliminates the potential for video
interruptions due to bad BNC terminations.
•E
asy to Integrate – Outputting a standard analog video
signal, FLIR cameras work with most existing video
detection systems.
Two video Wiring
• Easy to Maintain – Thermal cameras require minimal Options: BNC or
Connector-Less Terminal
periodic maintenance. Because they see a completely
different wavelength of energy, they are generally unaffected Power Input

by the dust that can severely impact visible cameras.
