III. Discussion
Functions- is a relation between sets that associates to every element of a first set
exactly one element of the second set.
Algebra- is the study of mathematical symbols and the rules for manipulating these
symbols
Compositions- operation on function, which can be thought of as a function of a
function

Sum: (f+g) (x) = f (x) + g (x)

Difference: (f-g) (x) = f (x) - g (x)
Product: (fg) (x) = f (x) x g (x)
Quotient: (f/g) (x) = f(x)/g(x), provided g (x) is not equal to 0
Vertical Shifts- is when the graph literally moves vertically, up or down. The movement
is all based on what happens to the y-value of the graph. The y-axis of a coordinate plane
is the vertical axis. When a function shifts vertically, the y-value changes.
Horizontal Shifts- are inside changes that affect the input (x-) axis values and shift the
function left or right.
Even Functions- if f (-x) = f(x) for all x in the domain of f.
Odd Functions- graph of f is symmetric with respect to the origin.
Vertical Stretching and Shrinking- is the stretching of the graph away from the x-axis; is
the squeezing of the graph toward the x-axis.
Horizontal Stretching and Shrinking- is the stretching of the graph away from the y-axis;
is the squeezing of the graph toward the y-axis.

1. f (x) = x2 – 2x – 3 ; g (x) = 6 x3 - 8 x3 – 5 x -7

2. g (x) = 4 x2 + 3 x + 6 ; f (x) = 4 (x + 2) – 4
