In the sea there are many islands. In its warm waters there are some little ones. We call them
“Coral(珊瑚) Islands”. A coral island is very nice to look at. I t looks like a ring of land(一圈陆地)
with trees, grass, and flowers on it. One part of the ring is open to the water. There is a little
round lake inside the island. If you look into this lake , you will see beautiful coral. You may
think they are flowers. If you look at a piece of coral, you will see many little holes in it. In each
of these holes a very small sea animal has lived. These small animals make the coral. They began
to build(营造)it under the water. Year after year, the coral grew higher and higher. At last it grew
out of the water. Then the sea brought small trees and something else to it. After some
years , these things changed into earth. Sometimes the wind brought seeds to the island.
Sometimes birds flow over it and brought seeds to the island. The little seeds grew. In a few years
there were plants all over the island. In a few more years there were trees growing there. So you
see, these islands were built little by little ( 一点点形成的).The workers were very small. Don't
they teach us a lesson? Can you think what the lesson is?

When I was looking for a Christmas present for my daughter in a toy store, a nicely dressed
little girl, with some money in her little hand, was looking at some beautiful dolls. Whenever she
saw a doll she liked, she would ask her father if she had enough money. He usually said yes.[来源:

At the same time, a boy, in old and small clothes, was looking at some video games. He, too,
had money in his hand, but it looked no more than five dollars. E ach time he picked up one of the
video games and looked at his father, he shook his head.
The little girl had chosen her doll, a very beautiful one. However, she noticed the boy and his
father. She saw the boy give up a video game with disappointment( 失 望 ) and walk to another
corner of the store.
The little girl put her doll back to the shelf and ran over to the video game. After she talked to
her father, she paid for the video game and whispered(耳语) to the shop assistant.
So the boy got the video game that he wanted for free -he was told it was a prize from the
store. He smiled happily, although he felt it was incredible.
The girl saw all this happen. She smiled, too.
When I walked out of the store to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had
done that. I would never forget their short talk. “Daddy, didn’t Grandma want me to buy
something that would make me happy?”
He said, “Of course, she did.”
“Well, I just did!” With that, the little girl started skipping(蹦跳) towards their car happily.

I have a rule for travel: Never carry a map. I prefer to ask for direction.
Foreign visitors are often puzzled in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In
Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example. the Japanese
wi ll say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit
market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, usually there are not many landmarks. There are
no mountains, so the 1and is very flat. In many places, there are no towns or buildings within
miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for
example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure
distance by means of time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” You ask. “Oh,” they
answer, “It’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They
don’t know.
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give di rections because visitors seldom
understand the Greek language. Instead of giving you the direction, a Greek will often say,
“Follow me.” Then he’ll lead you through the streets of the city to the post office.
Sometimes a person doesn’t know the answer to your question. What happens in this
situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one
answers, “I don’t know.” A person in Yucatan thinks that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually
give an answer, often a wrong one. A visitor can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
One thing will help you everywhere in Japan, in the United States, in Greece, in Mexico, or
in any other place. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his
body language. He or she will usually turn and then point in the correct direction. Go in that
direction, and you may find the post office!
46. The passage mainly tells us that ______.
A. there are not many landmarks in the American Midwest
B it’s difficult for people to travel in foreign countries
C there are different ways to give directions in differe nt parts of the world
D. New Yorkers often say, “I have no idea.” But people in Yucatan, Mexico never say this
47. The passage says, “In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions.” The word “landmark”
means ______.
A. street names B. building names C. hotels, markets and bus stop
D. buildings or places that are easily recognized(认识)
48. In which places do people tell distance by means of time?
A. Japan. B. American Midwest. C. Los Angeles, California. D. Greece.
49. In the passage, ______ countries are mentioned by the writer.
A. seven B. four C. five D. eight
50. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Travelers can learn about people’s customs by asking questions about directions.

directions by means of time.
C. A person’s body language can help you understand directions.
