Dear Ms. Pavelich

My name is Derek Jesse, and I am incredibly excited about joining your grade four class
at Crestwood School. I am very enthusiastic about spending my PS1 practicum expanding my
knowledge about the teaching profession as a student-teacher. I have been working toward my
bachelor’s degree in fine arts for the past two and a half years. I am a history major and have
sincerely enjoyed expanding my knowledge about Canadian, European, and American history
throughout my educational journey.
I have direct experience in the classroom through my Ed. 2500 placement at Alexandra
middle school. I worked alongside my T.A. in his grade seven humanities class. While
supervising students who were unable to participate in an outdoor activity, I embraced this
opportunity to get to know the student's interests and shared some of my own; understanding the
importance of building relationships with the students early on led to better classroom
management throughout the term. By gaining students trust right from the beginning, the
students felt more comfortable with my presence in the classroom I was able to check-in on
student’s progress and helped them with daily activities set by the Teacher.
I volunteered at Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Center through the Young Entrepreneurs
Program that was organized by the EUS in my second semester at Medicine Hat College. By
taking part in the initial Dragons Den proposal stage, I learned to evaluate each student's project
and the importance of giving positive formal feedback on how to improve their product before
approving its production. I also helped to supervise the students through the production process. I
enjoyed guiding students on how to construct their final products, one student was making bath
bombs, and I suggested that she use generic brand products to reduce costs. Through
volunteering, I was able to help these students gain a better understanding of what it takes to start
a business and produce a marketable product. At the end of the project, the Medicine Hat College
hosted a market place where students were able to sell their products. It was a fantastic
experience to see the expressions of pride in all the students of what they had accomplished. This
experience helped me to gain a better understanding of the importance of building meaningful
lessons for students that pertain to real-life situations.
On a personal note, I am married to my wonderful wife, Jody, and we share the privilege
of being parents of our beautiful three years old daughter Emily. I have learned so much about
teaching over the past three years from being a father; for example, it was a humbling experience
for me to understand that she is experiencing everything for the first time and that I had to slow
down and guide those experiences to further her understanding. I also have extensively traveled
throughout Alberta during my fifteen years as a utility locator, and from that have gained a
passion for photography, my main focus is taking photographs of abandoned farmhouses,
buildings, and vehicles. I believe my hobby grows from my love of history and wanting to
interpret it’s past. I am also a self-taught musician. I have played bass guitar in a band for
eighteen years and have performed live in many venues. I feel that my experience of performing
in front of audiences has helped to prepare me for performing as a teacher in the classroom.
I look forward to joining your classroom. I bring with me forty-three years of life
experience and a well-rounded understanding of professionalism. I have chosen teaching as a
new career path, and I am excited and eager to learn how to become proficient in my new career.
Sincerely,

Derek Jesse.
