Product Briefs

LaserJet 1100
-Will not wake from sleep mode. Print a Windows Test Page and look for either of two files:
hpdcmon.dll or tmlmon.dll. These are included in the latest driver.
-Driver Version. Note the latest driver version 1.00.5.029 in English is the same as 1.00.5.028
for other languages.
-Separation Pad Kits. A “T” kit will be available mid-Dec for customers to fit free of charge to
solve multipick problems. The kit can be obtained from Customer Service Centres (ECCC) via
StarTek or (possibly) over the web.

LaserJet 2100
-Fuser Issue. Printing on long narrow media can lead to fuser failures (bubbling) as fuser roller
surface cannot dissipate the heat. Driver to be modified to correct this (Dec).
-Formatter P/N did not roll. Blind roll of the printer firmware. Formatter p/n C4132-60001
stayed the same. Old datecode is 19980828, new datecode is 19991018 (no DIMM solution).
-Legacy II Driver Roll. Version 4.3.2.50 for Win 9x-Win NT4, fixes include: manual duplex
causes paper jams, print area failures, A6 paper size missing, watermark characters type
backwards, when manual feed tray is selected it stays selected (older drivers).
-Forms Tab/Tray Linking Issue in NT4. Original driver had “Tray Assignments-Link” feature
and the new driver has a “NT Forms” tab. The two features work somewhat differently and create
confusion. Being investigated.
-“RETRY” during EIO configuration. Some third-party EIO cards will not communicate with
the HP 2100 printer. Replace existing Formatter with one that has upgraded firmware (datecode
19991018). Note there are no FLASH or DIMM solutions.

LaserJet 3100/3150
-Separation Pad Kits. An “L” kit is available for multipick issues on the 6L, 3100 and 3150.
The kit is customer installable and available free of charge from Customer Care Centres (ECCC)
via StarTek. It will also be available on the web at a later date (url to be set up). Note the kit can
also be fitted to the 5L, but this has to be purchased. New separation pads are brown; old ones are
grey.
-Software Issues.
q Won’t work when networked and using Windows Me
q Blank pages/lines missing when printing in landscape with ATI Rage video card using
Windows 9x (lower graphics hardware acceleration).
q Not enough disk space on Target Drive (fixed with version 197D).
q Speed dials limited to 199.
-JetSuite Pro. New patch version 197E updates 197D (i.e. must have 197D installed for 197E to
work). Only available on the web.

LaserJet 4000/4050
-Maintenance Counter Update. If the Maintenance Kit is replaced prior to the PERFORM
PRINTER MAINTENANCE message, attempts to reset the counter will not work. In other words
the message can be reset but the counter won’t resulting in the message re-appearing soon
afterwards (at the 200K mark). Firmware revisions 3.68 (LJ4000) and 6.28 (LJ4050) resolved this
problem.
-41.5 Error. Usually accompanied by blank pages. Always check separation roller is engaged in
paper tray first before changing any parts.

3
-50.4 Fuser Error. Caused by bad incoming AC power which should be checked out first.
However the Engine Controller Board has now been modified to make it less susceptible to
problems with the customer’s AC power.
-Firmware Upgrades LJ4000/5000. Latest firmware is 3.76 which will be rolled into rebuilt
Formatters. DIMM part number is 5181-3578. See later for list of fixes.
-Firmware Upgrades LJ4050. Latest firmware is 6.32. Revision 6.30 will be on all rebuilt
Formatters. DIMM part number is C4251-67904. Revision 6.32 fixes 79 Service Error with an
envelope feeder. See later for list of fixes.
-Software Issues.
q WHQL Certification (CAT) files become corrupted and fail digital signature check.
Under investigation.
q MS Multi-Language Server does not currently support multiple language versions of
print drivers.

LaserJet 5000
-Firmware Upgrade. Latest firmware is revision 3.76, DIMM part number 5181-3578. See later
for fix list.
-50.4 Errors. Same as for the LaserJet 4000/4050.
-50.2 Errors. Fuser cracking mainly caused by repeated jamming of ledger or larger media fed
from the MP tray. As paper was jammed in the fuser , the fuser would heat and cool too rapidly,
resulting in cracked ceramic on fuser. Fix was to increase thickness of ceramic layer (blind roll).
-41.3 Errors Unexpected Paper Size. Usually caused by bent registration assembly (although
first check for unsecured separation rollers/pads). Bending of the reg assy usually occurs after
toner cartridge installed with lifting plate in upright position. Countermeasures rolled into
production include new torsion spring and tabs on upper reg assy.
-Duplexer Noise. Noise can sound like grinding of gears or buzzing – this is normal (coming from
the refeed and reversing motors). A firmware change to the duplexer assembly will reduce the
noise (s/n LGDA023324 and higher).
-Optional Tray “making music” (customer description). Noises coming from the optional 500-
sheet feeder, solved with a firmware change (within the sheet feeder). Sheet feeders with the new
firmware have serial numbers LGFA026719 and higher, and LGLA047638 and higher (stamped
on the top of the feeder).
-Intermittent 62 error. Error analysis points (incorrectly) to bad memory DIMM. Heat related –
fails at higher temperature. Resolution is to replace the Formatter.
-53.1x.03 Error. Same analysis and resolution as for 62 error.
-Production Changes (Fall’2000).
q JetDirect card changed from 600 to 610. Note new card does not offer support for
localtalk and bnc connection.
q N bundle now comes with 8MB SDRAM (instead of 4MB) making 12MB total RAM.
q New DN bundle (C8068A) includes 500sh Tray 3, duplexer, 36MB, JetDirect 610
q New 5GB disc drives under test and may be introduced in the near future.

LaserJet 8000/8100/8150
-Error 13.3 Paper Jam. Paper delay jam, paper not reaching PS1 in registration area when
feeding from Tray 3. Second pass rollers in the PIU (Paper Input Unit) getting contaminated with
paper filler (Calcium Carbonate) dust causing paper to slip. Replace rollers (RB1-6581-000CN) or
complete PIU if close to one million images. See service note later in document.
-Error 55.A, 55.7, 55.3 (LJ8000/5Si in duplex). There have been a number of cases of this type,
usually Error 55.A on a LJ8000 and always in duplex. Try replacing the fuser assembly (duplex
and the fuser assemblies have a common power supply). Check power supply/ non-HP
fusers/toner cartridges.
-Error 55.1. Could be fuser but most likely LVPS.

4
-Cannot recognise duplex. The black plastic casing (RB1-6502-020CN) around the duplex
connector had broken, although on first glance contacts and connector looked fine. However when
the duplex assembly was inserted the connector would back off and not make contact.
-Initialisation fails with top row of squares on display. Firmware DIMM missing!
-Error 79 on MFPs. Will get this message if insufficient memory to load SSA firmware.
Removing the hard disk will “eliminate” the error but not solve the problem.
-Config Page on the 8150MFP. Note the “hp” watermark on the Configuration Page is blanked
out for the MFP model. This is because it was difficult to copy and potentially could generate
false hardware calls.

-Firmware 8000/8100. Current firmware for the 8000 is 4.54 (p/n C4085-60008) and for the 8100
is 5.54 (p/n C4214-60008). The following issues were resolved in MB4.54 (LJ8000) and MB5.54
(LJ8100), released June’2000:

LaserJet 8150 NEW !
The HP LaserJet 8150 is the replacement product for the
HP LaserJet 8100 and 8000 printer families and was
released beginning of November’2000. It has the
following features compared to the LaserJet 8100:

Ø Faster processor (250MHz v 166MHz)

Ø Edge-to-Edge printing within 2mm
Ø Duplex Registration Adjustment
Ø Flash Firmware, can be upgraded remotely
Ø New memory, backwards compatible
Ø Faster JetDirect Card (x4)
Ø Job Retention in RAM
Ø Embedded Web Server in ‘N’models
Ø Foreign Interface Port for 3rd party copy job accounting
Ø New SDRAM Memory DIMMs
Ø PostScript Level 3

These features come from a new Formatter Board which is the essential difference between the
8150 and 8100, although the DC Controller must be the latest version (Printer Number 10 on
Config Page, and not the older “C”) else the edge-to-edge feature will be disabled. The paperpath
for the 8150 is the same as its predecessor. Note there is no 8100-to-8150 upgrade available.
There are several changes to the menu map including a second event log page to list customer
printing statistics, plus a Duplex Registration Menu and an entry in the Information Menu for the
Edge-to-Edge calibration.

There are five models (‘H’model not available in Europe):

C4265A LaserJet 8150 -2x500sh Trays, 32MB RAM.

C4266A LaserJet 8150N -8150 + JetDirect 610N (J4169A fast Ethernet).

8150 Formatter
There are four slots in which to insert DIMMs, labeled Flash, J10, J6 and J7.

The firmware is ONLY located on a flashable DIMM (i.e. no base firmware in the Formatter
board). There are two copies of the firmware on each firmware DIMM, the working version
which can be updated and a backup version which cannot be overwritten. The backup copy will
execute (on power up) whenever the other version gets corrupted.

Note a 32MB DIMM must be in the second slot J10, otherwise the printer will not work.
Early shipments of LJ8150 units only have one firmware copy loaded on the DIMM, and ‘N’
models are being shipped with an empty card for downloading the Embedded Web Server.

The third and fourth slots (J6 & J7) are available for additional memory, a Font DIMM, or the
Embedded Web Server firmware. The printer does not support EDO Memory DIMMs, only
SDRAM. This is a difference between the 8100 and 8150.

8
LaserJet 8150 Event Log Page 2

C4216A-16 08-Dec-99
Flipper update to 8-bin Mailbox (and 5-bin w stapler)
Situation: Flipper assembly failure can cause mostly 13.x2.04 or 66.x2.08, but also may generate
13.x2.02, 13.x2.03 and 13.x2.05 errors. Root cause was lack of tension on internal timing belt.
Solution: Final fix was to fit a Flipper Kit C4785-60529 which included modified flipper assembly
and 19.24 mailbox firmware. Modified units have serial numbers DE06C13600 (8-Bin) or
DE06C05092 (5-Bin w stapler) and above.

C4216A-15 01-Oct-99
Z-fold when printing jobs from alternate trays
Situation: When printing jobs from alternate input sources AND there is a pause (Standby) in the
printing of the jobs, the next alternate input paper source MAY incur a Z-fold condition which
exhibits itself as a white stripe (missing data) or sometimes a paper jam at the front of the
registration roller.
Solution: Updated DC Controller PCA, part number RG5-4375-030CN.

C4216A-14B 04-Aug-00
