Grade Level: Subject: Prepared by:

5 Science-Physical Science Annie Bowen

Overview & Purpose:

Using the scientific method, students will be able to show how changes in procedures can cause
changes in results.
Education Standards Addressed:
S 112.16 Science, Grade 5, Adopted 2017
(b) Knowledge and Skills
(2) Scientific investigation and reasoning. The student uses scientific practices during
laboratory and outdoor investigations. The student is expected to:
(A) describe, plan, and implement simple experimental investigations testing
one variable;
(B) ask well defined questions, formulate testable hypothesis, an select and
use appropriate equipment and technology;
(C) collect and record information to construct reasonable explanations from
direct (observable) and indirect (inferred) evidence;
(D) analyze and interpret information using detailed observations and accurate
measuring;
(E) demonstrate that repeated investigations may increase the reliability of
results;
(F) communicate valid conclusions in both written and verbal forms; and
(G) construct appropriate simple graphs, tables, maps and charts using
technology, including computers, to organize, examine, and evaluate
information.
Lesson Details:
Objectives: -student will be expected use the scientific method to execute applying different
independent variables to a dependent variable.
-student will be expected to record date and apply it to a chart.
Materials needed: 2 different coins, paper towel, pipette, water in small cup, pencil and lab
sheet
Information: Be sure to change the independent variables (the way the drop falls) according to
the lab sheet. Be sure to change the dependent variable (heads or tails) when you
switch between trials.
Verification: Can the student follow directions and complete the lab and recording their results?
Can the student build a bar graph by using the previously recorded results?
Can the student complete the scientific method flow chart correctly?
Activity: How many drops of water can two different coins hold until they overflow.
Working through the scientific method flow chart students complete two trials,
coin heads up or coin tails up, the student will change the way drops fall onto the
coin. They will record the number of drops on the lab sheet and apply that data to
form a bar chart.
Summary: If you needed to rewrite your hypothesis, what would it say?
