ONLINE ACTIVITY 2 – Types of Chemical Reactions

EXPERIMENT 1

1. What species are present in the beaker after the reaction occurred? Name both
aqueous and solid species in the beaker

The aqueous species in the beaker after the reaction are H+, OH-, Ag+, Cu2+, and
NO3- , while the solid species are Copper (Cu) and Silver (Ag).

2. Why did the color of the AgNO3 solution change from colourless to blue?

When you add AgNO3 (silver nitrate), which is clear and colorless, together with
Cu (Copper), in solid form, to a single beaker, each Cu atom will give away 2
electrons to the 2 Ag(silver) ions, in order for the Copper to be Cu2+ and the 2 Ag atoms
to precipitate out as a solid substance in the product. Initially, Copper Nitrate forms blue
crystals when dissolved in an aqueous solution, thus, it is because of it that the initial
colourless solution becomes blue and clear by the process of elimination.

3. What would happen to the amount of Ag in the beaker if you added another
50.0 mL of AgNO3 solution?

If you add another 50.0mL of AgNO3 solution, the amount of Ag in grams will
double up from 1.079g to 2.158g.

4. What is the net ionic equation of the redox reaction that occurred between
AgNO3 and Cu?

Cu(s) + 2AgNO3 (aq)  Cu(NO3)2 (aq) + 2Ag(s)

5. Which of the reactants is the oxidizing agent, and which is the reducing agent?

 Cu(Copper) – reducing agent

 AgNO3 (silver nitrate) – oxidizing agent
EXPERIMENT 2

1. What was the temperature change that occurred in STEP 4 of the experiment?
Is the reaction exothermic or endothermic?

The temperature change is from 25.0 degrees Celsius to 34.9 degrees Celsius.
The reaction is exothermic.

2. What happened to the color of the solution as soon as you added the
phenolphthalein color indicator? What volume of NaOH was necessary to induce
a change of color in the solution?

By adding the first 5mL of NaOh, nothing happened with regards to the color of
the solution but after adding 35mL of NaOH, the color turned pink.

3. What is the purpose of the phenolphthalein color indicator?

After the solution turned pink by adding more and more NaOH, the purpose of
the phenolphthalein is to indicate acid-base titrations. When the solution was acidic, the
color of it was clear but when it became more basic (by adding NaOH), it became pink.

4. What is the approximate concentration of the OH species after adding the 35

mL of 1M NaOH?

 OH species – 0.499920 g

5. What is the approximate concentration of the H+ species after adding the 35

mL of 1 M NaOH? How does this compare to the initial concentration of the H+
species before adding the 1 M NaOH?

 Before: H+ species –3 g
 After: H+ species – 4.18113 e-13 g

The data shows that the concentration of Hydrogen ions was lessened due to the
prominent presence of NaOH.
