The Vietnam Pavilion was designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects, with Vo trong
Nghia himself as the principal architect. Despite its small lot size of 887sqm, the
pavilion is described as a forest with 46 trees above the building.
The motto for this is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. They wanted to give
the power to the urban people by not only providing their food for their body, but also
having a positive and harmonic feeding for their mind which is an important human
daily need. Their design strategy is to combine nature with buildings because they
believe it can harmonize the living environment which can positively affect the human
mind. They come up with this pavilion design because of the occurring losses of green
areas especially on the cities like Hanoi, and Ho Chin Minh. They have come up with
the design solution to plant trees on top of buildings which is evident on their building
design. That is why their design concept is “Building for trees” for future cities which
give joy of the living to people.
Vo Trong Nghia’s proposal is to bring back
the trees to the cityscape in order to share the
importance of nature and regenerate living in
harmony with nature. The trees provide the visual
and emotional impact to the human beings and it
also drop the shadows on the building in order to
block the solar radiation. Furthermore, the trees
create a refreshing breeze along with the pool, to
enable energy-saving operation of the building
while providing a comfortable place in the
surroundingarea.
The highlight material for the pavilion is bamboo because it has a very rich and
strong relationship with the Vietnamese culture and life scene. The columns are
cladded by bamboo which gives a texture to regain peace in the minds of the people
and a symbol of tactile natural material in space. Vietnamese bamboo craftsmen
installed the bamboo parts which show the Vietnamese spirit of manufacture.

The pavilion however, has a low design budget and construction cost with only
2.08 Million USD. It was only opened to the public for six months. The pavilion had been
realized as a building which has obtained many fruitful achievements by bamboo
rapid re-production, trees planted in pots and reusable structure.
