Cause and Effect In Music Videos - Troye Sivan - Blue Neighbourhood Trilogy

Original:

The Blue Neighborhood Trilogy has three separate songs but they are all strung together in one
music video telling a story. Most music videos are able to fit their story in a couple of minutes,
but this story shows the progression of two boy’s relationship and depicts a different emotion in
each song. In the first song, the audience is introduced two the two boy’s, Troye and “blue boy.”
Troye and blue boy hugging and both are having flashbacks showing their happy childhood. It is
shown that the blue boy does have a strong relationship with his father, at least in the past, and
they are seen playing around and smiling. Aside from his relationship with his father, the two
boys are constantly with each other playing and their friendship is strong. The only conflict in
the first song is when they have to leave each other, whether it be from the day is over or if their
parents get into a fight and they leave. In the second song Troye and blue boy’s relationship
grows into more than a friendship. However, blue boy’s father finds out about the relationship
and physically hurts blue boy. Since blue boy wants his father's respect and approval, he agrees
that he will not pursue any kind of friendship and cuts Troye out. When Troye goes to see blue
boy, blue boy’s father is there, so blue boy physically pushes him to go back to please his father.
Later, blue boy finds a girlfriend, someone he does not actually like but his father approves of
the girl. In the last song, it pans to a blue boy’s father’s funeral. Troye is also at the funeral out of
respect but he leaves half way because he can’t stand blue boy’s relationship with the girl.
Throughout this part of the video, Blue boy is having flashbacks of the fun times he has with his
father. When blue boy encounters Troye alone they hug and comfort each other and there are
flashbacks of their happy times in the past. But, blue boy is brought back to reality when he sees
his girlfriend and has flashbacks of his father’s disapproval. Although his father is gone and he
can now pursue a relationship with Troye, he feels guilt. He is stuck in a dilemma where he can
choose to continue a life pretending to be someone he isn’t, or to be with Troye but feel guilt.
This results in blue boy committing suicide.
