III B.Tech. I Semester Regular Examinations – November, 2018

WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-I
Time: 3 hours (CIVIL) Max. Marks: 60
SECTION – A
Answer all ten questions 10×1M=10M

1. What are the different types of precipitation?

2. Define infiltration.

3. Define aquifer?

4. What are the advantages of sprinkler irrigation?

5. What is gross command area?

6. Define field capacity

7. What are the uses of canal lining?

8. What are alluvial canals?

9. What is meant by non-modular outlet?

10. List remedial measures for the failure of weirs?

SECTION – B
Answer all four questions 4×5M= 20 M

11. Describe the hydrologic cycle with a neat sketch.

(OR)
12. Describe in detail how the total precipitation is transformed into the total runoff.

13. Describe with a neat sketch, the principle of working of Symons’s non-recording Rain
gauge. How does the Indian standard rain gauge differ from symons gauge.
(OR)
14. The design storm of a watershed has the depths of rainfall 5.6 cm and 4.6 cm for the
consecutive one hour periods. The 1 hour Unit Hydrograph can be represented by a
triangle of base 8 hours with a peak of 60 cumecs occurring after 3 hours from the
beginning. Compute the flood hydrograph assuming an average loss rate of 6 mm per
hour and a constant base flow of 12 cumecs. What is the area of watershed and
coefficient of runoff?

15. Explain Check and basin flooding of irrigation with the help of neat sketch.
(OR)
16. Describe with neat sketches confined, semi-confined (or leaky), unconfined and perched
aquifers

17. In a recuperation test on an open well the water level was depressed by 4m and it was
observed to rise by 2.5 in 90 min. What is the specific capacity of the well? What would
be the yield from well under a depression head of 3 m if the diameter of the well is 7.5m.
(OR)
18. “All the waters are not fit for irrigation crops”. Discuss critically.

SECTION – C

Answer all three questions 3×10M= 30 M

19. A stream of 125 lit/sec was diverted from a canal and 100 lit/see were delivered to the
field. An area of 1.6 ha was irrigated in 8 hours. Effective depth of root zone was 1.7 m.
The runoff loss in the field was 420 m3. The depth of water penetration varied linearly
from 1.7 m at the head end of the field to 1.3 m at the tail end. Available moisture
holding capacity of the soil is 20 cm per meter depth of soil. Determine water
conveyance, water application, water storage and water distribution efficiencies. The
irrigation was started at a moisture extraction level of 50% of the available moisture.
(OR)
20. Find after how many days watering should be done to ensure efficient use of irrigation
water when the field conditions are as detailed below.
Field capacity = 29%
Permanent wilting point = 15%
Density of soil = 1600 kg/m3.
Effective Root zone depth = 0.8 m.
Daily consumptive use of water = 12 mm.

21. Describe the method of designing a canal based on Lacey’s Theory.

(OR)
22. Describe various methods adopted as anti-waterlogging measures.

23. Design a vertical drop weir on Bligh’s theory for the following site conditions:
Maximum flood discharge : 3000 cumecs
HFL before construction : 305.0 m
Minimum water level :d/s bed level (296 m)
FSL of canal : 303 m
Allowable flux :1m
Coefficient of creep :12
Permissible exit gradient : 1/6
(OR)
24. Explain any five types of canal falls with neat sketch.
