HOW PEOPLE GET
CULTURAL INFORMATIONS:
✴ direct contact with
the groups
✴ information and
perceptions from
other people
✴ books, news,
newspapers and other
forms of mass media

CULTURAL BIAS CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

TWO CATEGORIES OF

22
✴ General bias assumptions CULTURAL BIAS:
about people who are not
from your own background.
E.G. ‘THEY’RE NOT LIKE US’.

✴ Bias assumptions about a

particular cultural group.
E.G ‘INDIANS ONLY EAT CURRY’ OR ‘TODAY’S
YOUTH HAVE NO RESPECT’.

CULTURAL BIAS CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

CONSEQUENCES OF
CULTURAL BIAS:

STIGMA
NEGATIVE LABELLING OF A GROUP
BASED ON CERTAIN ATTRIBUTES
WHICH MAY EVENTUALLY GENERATE
A NEGATIVE IMAGE TO THE PUBLIC.

CULTURAL BIAS CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

CONSEQUENCES OF
CULTURAL BIAS:

STEREOTYPING
INVOLVES MAKING ASSUMPTIONS
ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF
AN INDIVIDUAL WHICH ARE
BASED ON A STANDARD,
SIMPLISTIC CHARACTERISATION
OF THE CULTURE (CULTURAL
AWARENESS TOOL, 2003)

CULTURAL BIAS CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

CONSEQUENCES OF
CULTURAL BIAS:

DISCRIMINATION
REFERS TO SHOWING PREJUDICE
TOWARDS A CERTAIN GROUP.
MOST OF THE TIME, DISCRIMINATION
INVOLVES THE UNFAIR LABELLING AND
TREATMENT OF OTHERS AND IS BASED
ON BOTH STIGMA AND STEREOTYPING.

ETNOCENTRISM

Cultural Issues Affecting Communication

O N
ETHNOCENTRISM
T I
N I
I
▸ a phenomenon that occurs in all cultures.

▸ It refers to people’s tendency to judge other

F
people’s behaviour or actions according to
the standards of their own culture.

E
▸ It results in people believing their own
culture’s way of life is the ‘right’ way.

ETHNOCENTRISM
Such generalisations, often made without a conscious
awareness that we've used our culture as a universal
yardstick, can be very inaccurate and cause us to misjudge
others and make false assumptions about other people’s
cultures and customs. For example:

▸ An Australian sees an Asian person sniffing loudly.

Australians think everyone should use a handkerchief or
tissue to blow one’s nose and consider sniffing to be rude.

▸ An Asian person sees an Australian blowing his nose on a

handkerchief or tissue. Asians view handkerchiefs and
tissues as unhygienic and are often repulsed by blowing
one’s nose.
SOME WAYS TO BE
CULTURALLY SENSITIVE
✴ Acknowledge the differences in social customs,
family life, definitions of normal practice or
dietary habits.
✴ Be aware of your own practices and avoid using
them as a means by which to judge others.
✴ Be willing to learn by asking questions and
seeking clarification when you encounter
unfamiliar ideas or behaviour

ISSUES THAT
CAUSE CONFLICT

Cultural Issues Affecting Communication

✴ Cross-cultural misunderstandings or
conflict may arise whenever there are
cultural differences.
✴ The following are some potential
causes or situations in which
conflicts or misunderstandings can
happen:

ISSUES THAT CAUSE CONFLICT CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

✴ misunderstandings or conflict between
different nationalities, religious or ethnic
groups
✴ cultural ignorance and insensitivity
✴ lack of awareness of different societal
lifestyle practices
✴ differences in cultural practice
✴ differences in perception of illness and
treatment
✴ miscommunication and misinterpretation.

GLOBAL ISSUES
AFFECTING COMMUNICATION
GLOBAL ISSUES
✴ Informally, a global issue is
any issue that adversely
affects the global community
and environment, possibly in a
catastrophic way. Including
but not limited to:
environmental issues,
political crisis, social issues
and economic crisis.
Solutions to global issues
often require cooperation
among nations.

GLOBAL ECONOMY CULTURAL ISSUES AFFECTING COMMUNICATION

✴ National and regional economies around the world are becoming
increasingly integrated with each other through trade in goods
and services, transfer of technology, and production chains. The
interconnectedness of financial markets is also expanding rapidly.
✴ At the same time, however, economic integration poses serious
inherent risks: in a globalized world economy, an adverse event
such as a monetary crisis in one part of the world can easily spread
to other parts,
✴ just as a contagious disease spreads from person to person. An
example of such contagion was the East Asian financial crisis of
1997–98, in which a financial and currency crisis in Thailand quickly
triggered similar upheavals in the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, and
elsewhere, prompting international intervention to avert a global
crisis. Poverty and inequality, financial stability, debt, migration,
trade, and food security are the examples of Global Economic
Issues.
