Lesson Plan Presentation 2

Geometry - 50 minutes
Coordinate Planes and Intersecting Lines

Educational Objectives:

● The students will be able to find the distance between two points.
● The students will be able to find the perimeter and area of rectangles and triangles.

Aligned to the CCSS and NCTM Standards:

● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GPE.B.6
Find the point on a directed line segment between two given points that partitions the
segment in a given ratio.

● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.GPE.B.7
Use coordinates to compute perimeters of polygons and areas of triangles and rectangles,
e.g., using the distance formula.*

Assessment on Learning (list all formative & summative with timeline):

● Exit Slip

Accommodations for students with specific learning needs:

● For students with specific learning needs, there will be time in between section of the
lesson for questions and clarification. Also there will be time allowed at the end of class
for any questions and we will review part of the assessment.

Academic Language
Language Function (select 1):

Analyze Compare/Contrast Construct Describe Evaluate

Examine Identify Interpret Justify Locate

Explain Prove Argue Synthesize

Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to
practice using the language function identified above:
The student will be learning to evaluate the distance between points on a coordinate plane. First
they will need to evaluate the distance by counting. Then they will use the Pythagorean theorem
to evaluate the distance between points when they are not able to count. The students will also
evaluate the perimeter and area of a rectangle and a triangle with their respective formulas.

Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified
above, describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to
understand and/or use:

Vocabulary:

● Pythagorean Theorem: in any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the
triangle's legs is the same as the square of the length of the triangle's hypotenuse.
● Perimeter: the distance around an object
● Area: the amount of space a 2-D object takes up
● Perimeter formula: add up all side lengths
● Area of a rectangle: base length multiplied by the height length, i.e. b*h
● Area of a triangle: base length multiplied by the height length divided by two, i.e. b*2h

Materials:

Teacher
● Notes
● Markers
● Yarn

● Pencils

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

Good morning class, first I would like you all to read the agenda for the day and get started on
the warm up. As you can see, we have moved on from transformations and we will be reviewing
a theorem to help us with the third problem on the warm up. We will also be using formulas to
find area and perimeter in the coordinate plane.

Questions to Ask

1. Find the length/distance of each segment.

2. How do you find the length/distance of UP?
3. What is the Pythagorean theorem?
4. What is the meaning of perimeter? Area?
5. What is the formula for perimeter?
6. What is the formula for the area of a rectangle? Triangle?

Sequence of Events (include time needed):

1. (5 mins) Anticipatory Set/Attention Getter and Warm up exercises

2. (10 mins) Review Warm up exercises and review Pythagorean Theorem: The
students will take 5 mins to try the warm up and we will begin the lesson and continue
the lesson by reviewing the Pythagorean theorem to solve one of the warm up problems.
3. (10 mins) Perimeter and Area on the Coordinate Plane: Now the students will use the
Pythagorean theorem to find the measure of the sides of a triangle and then be able to
find the area and perimeter.
4. (10 mins) Practice 1 Problems: During this time the students will have the opportunity
to work individually on 6 problems from their practice.
5. (5 mins) Review of Practice 1 Problems: At this time students had time to work on the
practice problem and we will review as a class the problems the students struggled with
the most.
6. (5 mins) Assessment- Exit Slip: At the end of the lesson there will be an exit slip like the
exercises done in the practice.
7. (5 mins) Conclusion/Questions

Conclusion/Summary:
Today we reviewed the Pythagorean theorem to help us find the distance between two points.
We also used the formulas to find the perimeters and areas of figures. This lesson will guide us
into the lesson of finding the perimeter and area of polygons.
