Triangle Geometry
Prove Congruency Theorems

Educational Objectives:
• The students will be able to prove the sum of interior angles in a triangle are 180 degrees.

Aligned to the CCSS and NCTM Standards:

• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSG.CO.C.10
Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a
triangle sum to 180°; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent.

Assessment on Learning (list all formative & summative with timeline):

• Practice 1

Accommodations for students with specific learning needs:

• For students with specific learning needs, there will be time in between section of the
lesson for questions and clarification. I will provide a cut out model for the students to
visualize the theorems used and to organize thoughts. Also there will be time allowed at
the end of class for any questions and we will review part of the assessment.

Academic Language

Language Function (select 1):

Analyze Compare/Contrast Construct Describe Evaluate

Examine Identify Interpret Justify Locate

Explain Prove Argue Synthesize

Identify a learning task from your plan that provides students with opportunities to
practice using the language function identified above:

The students will be learning to prove the sum of interior angles f a triangle are 180
degrees. The students will determine the name of the angle pairs to prove these theorems. Then
they will use this information to solve for the missing angles value.

Additional Language Demands. Given the language function and learning task identified
above, describe the following associated language demands (written or oral) students need to
understand and/or use:
Vocabulary:
• Alternate Interior angles: angle pairs which are positioned in between parallel lines and
opposite sides of the transversal, these angle angles are also congruent
• Supplementary angles: adjacent angle pairs which add up to 180 degrees
• Interior Angles of a Triangle Theorem: the sum of interior angles of a triangle add up
to 180 degrees

Anticipatory Set/ Attention Getter:

Good afternoon class, first I would like you all to start by putting all your things away except for
a pencil. Today we will be taking notes and working individually or with a partner to do some
practice problems. We will be starting a new section today which will be proving the sum of
interior angles in a triangle are 180 degrees. Take a few moments to do the two warm up
problems individually.

Questions to Ask

1. What is the relationship between ∠3 and ∠5? They are alternate interior angles
2. What is true about these angles? They are congruent
3. What is the relationship between ∠3 and ∠4? They are supplementary angles
4. What is true about these angles? They add up to 180 degrees

Sequence of Events (include time needed):

1. (2 mins) Anticipatory Set/Attention Getter and Agenda: The teacher will review what is
expected for the day and the upcoming week. During this time the students will complete
the warmup exercise.
2. (8 mins) Warm up: Students are to complete the warmup exercise individually by
identifying the relationship between angle pairs. Then, we will review the warm up and
build connections within the lesson.
3. (10 mins) Interior Angles of a Triangle Theorem: Then the teacher will begin the
lesson by presenting the Interior Angles of a Triangle Theorem. The teacher will explain
the step by step proof for this theorem using the relationships of angles pairs.
4. (10 mins) WE DO/YOU DO: The teacher will review an example of solving for the
unknown. Then, the students will then have the opportunity to work individually on
Example 1 and work with partners for Example 2. We will review both examples to
check for understanding. This would be the time to answer questions about the steps to
proving the problems
5. (15 mins) Practice 1: Now the students will have the opportunity to work on the Practice
Task Sheet that resembles similar problems to the examples. The practice sheet will also
have application problems that are a bit more challenging than the examples. The
students as to finish the Practice Task Sheet and get it checked before leaving the class.
6. (5 mins) Conclusion/Questions

Conclusion/Summary:

Today we reviewed theorems to prove triangles as well as the rigid motions. We applied these
definitions and theorems to prove triangles congruent. This is the last lesson for the section. We
will be reviewing the rest of this week for the exam and continuing with proofs about triangles
for the next section.
