1.1 CONVERTEAM MV7000 DRIVE INTRODUCTION

1.1.1 ARCHITECTURE
Converteam MV7000 series are medium-voltage variable frequency drives. The topology is a 3-
level NPC (Neutral point clamped), voltage source inverter (VSI) using pulse width modulation
(PWM) for generating the output voltage. It comprises the new generation press pack IGBTs
(Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors) or IEGTs (Injection Enhanced Gate Transistors). Flat pack
technology is used for lower ratings.
Note: In this user manual, we will use IGBT as a generic term covering both IGBT and IEGT types.
A Converteam MV7000 Drive consists of several cubicles either mounted on a single skid as shown
in Figure 1-1 or made of several sections that are assembled at site.

• Rectifier: generates the DC link voltage; based on either diode type 12 pulses or 24 pulses,
or, as an option, active front end (AFE) based on IGBT.

• Precharge & premagnetization transformer: used to precharge the DC link, and to magnetize
the main transformer in order to avoid inrush current.

• DC Link: consists of DC capacitor bank.

• Chopper (optional): used for motor braking.

• Inverter: 3-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Press-Pack IGBT type. The grounding switch
is located in inverter cubicle.

• dV/dt filter: optional for MV7306 / MV7308, reduces switching transients to allow operation
with long motor cables. Equipped as standard for MV7312 / MV7316 / MV76xx.

• PEC Controller: Power Electronics Controller (PEC) provides high performance vector control
and ensures drive safety.

• Cooling Unit: provides deionized water for cooling inverter and rectifier to transfer drive
losses to external raw water circuit (optional air / de-ionized water heat exchanger).

• Sinus filter (option): converts the PWM Voltage output to a sinusoidal wave, which enhances
the motor capacity, reduces THD and allows a maximum output frequency above 90 Hz.

1.1.3 3-LEVEL INVERTER PRINCIPLE
Converteam MV7000 inverter consists of three phase legs; each leg generates the output voltage
for one motor phase.
In a 3-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) topology, DC link is divided into two sets of capacitors,
first set between DC+ and 0V, and second set between 0V and DC-.
Depending on IGBT gating combination, each inverter phase output can be connected to DC+ or
0V or DC-. As a result of this, the motor line-to-line voltage can be 100% VDC, 50% VDC or 0 (and
the same as negative). Figure 1-3 illustrates this principle with U-W motor voltage. All three phases
are conducting simultaneously. Phase V conduction is not represented in order to simplify the
diagram.
