2.4.1 Rectifier
The rectifier sub-unit comprises the following devices:

• Diode rectifier made of rectifier modules in series,

2 for 12 pulses, and 4 for 24 pulses.
• AC supply current sensors for protection.
• Precharge or precharge & pre-magnetization circuit for
MV73xx. This circuit is located in a separate cabinet for
MV76xx, and for AFE configuration as well. As standard, the
corresponding precharge / premagnetization transformer is
located in a project specific cubicle. For some ratings, it may
optionally be included in the rectifier cubicle.
• Main input terminals (6 for 12 pulses, and 12 for 24 pulses).

Figure 2-5 MV7306 SA DFE 12p rectifier cabinet

2.4.1.1 Diode Rectifier

The MV7000 incoming terminals are supplied by an isolation transformer, the requirements of which
are detailed in Section 2.6.3.
MV7000 comprises a 12 or 24 pulses rectifier, as defined in Section 2.2.3.
Rectifier module consists of water-cooled diode stack, which is individually removable. Each stack is
a 6-pulse diode rectifier. Several stacks are connected in series to get the complete rectifier
configuration.
The rectifier is designed to withstand the worst-case over-current (no rupture of diode in case of
diode failure). This design requires a protection by an upstream circuit breaker as described in
Section 2.6.1.

2.4.1.2 AC Current Sensors

Current transformers are used for measuring the rectifier input currents and for additional drive
protection. Two CT’s are connected in phase U and W for each 6-pulse rectifier.

2.4.1.3 Precharge and premagnetization circuit
From a 400V auxiliary supply, the precharge system provides the following:
• Charging of DC capacitor bank prior to main circuit breaker closing.
• Premagnetization of main transformer in order to reduce peak current in the mains during
main circuit breaker closing.
DC link voltage is monitored during precharge; abnormal value or slow voltage ramp will create a
fault and abort the precharge sequence.

DFE precharge system includes current limiting resistors which are activated by contactors.
Precharge takes about 5 s.
In case of AFE configuration, precharge is made of two steps:
• Charging DC capacitors through the same sequence as for DFE (5 s).
• Pulsing the AFE IGBT’s, thereby converting the DC link voltage into 3-phase AC voltage for
the premagnetization of the main transformer and phase synchro-check, during
approximately 60 seconds.

2.4.1.4 Mains input terminals

Refer to Section 3 (Installation) of MV7000 User Manual for terminal details.

2.4.2 DC Link
The DC Link comprises the following devices:

• DC capacitors bank.
• DC link voltage measurements.
• Capacitors discharge system.
• Ground fault detection system.

Figure 2-6 DC Link

2.4.2.1 DC link capacitors bank

The DC link capacitors are self-healing, dry-type film
capacitors.

2.4.2.2 DC link voltage measurement

Voltage sensors are used to measure both DC bus poles to DC link mid-point potential. High
impedance measurements are connected to the MV7000 control.

2.4.2.3 Capacitors discharge system
Resistors are connected permanently to both DC bus poles. When the converter is in off state, these
resistors discharge the DC capacitors bank to a voltage <50V in about 5 minutes. For safety
reasons, it is recommended to wait 10 minutes before closing the grounding switch, prior to
accessing any equipment connected.
Refer to the Drive Grounding Procedure in section 6.2 of the MV7000 User Manual.

Figure 2-8 Discharge resistor

2.4.2.4 Ground fault detection system

The ground fault detection system consists of the following devices:
• 1 set of resistors.
• 1 voltage sensor.
The middle point of the DC link is connected to ground through the set of resistors. The voltage
between the DC link middle point and ground is monitored. If the value exceeds a pre-set threshold,
the controller detects a ground fault.

Freewheeling diode stack
For MV7306 / MV7312 / MV7612 / MV7624 (all ratings with multiples of 6), freewheeling diodes are
integrated in IGBT. For MV7308 and all ratings with multiples of 8, a separate freewheeling diode
stack is used as shown in Figure 2-13.

Freewheeling diodes

Figure 2-13 MV7308 freewheeling diode stack

Clamp Capacitors
They are self-healing, dry-type film capacitors. The clamp capacitors are located behind the inverter
stack.
Protection considerations
Both the inverter stack and the clamp capacitors are close coupled in order to minimize inductance
and to reduce voltage stress on the IGBTs. This construction also results in a minimal number of
parts, resulting in increased reliability.
The gate drivers are directly mounted on the IGBT stacks, keeping wiring very short, and thus
preventing electromagnetic pick-up. The gate drivers are controlled and monitored via optical fiber,
one fiber for IGBT gate command, and the second for IGBT status feedback.
The following IGBT protections are embedded on the gate drivers:
• IGBT overcurrent.
• IGBT overvoltage.
• short-circuit detection.
• gate driver supply monitoring.
• pulse duration monitoring.
Any IGBT failure is transmitted to the PEC controller through fiber-optic status feedback.

2.4.3.2 Output current sensor
A closed-loop Hall effect current sensor (suitable for low frequency AC current measurements) is
used for measuring the phaseleg output current. Generally, measuring currents in two legs is
sufficient.

2.4.3.3 Common 24V DC gate driver power supply

The common 24V DC supply is composed of a transformer, a rectifier, and a filtering capacitor. The
transformer provides the high voltage insulation required. Negative pole of this 24V DC supply is
connected to the middle point of the DC bus.

2.4.5 Chopper (Option)
A chopper can optionally be added between positive and negative DC bus poles to dissipate excess
DC link energy in case of motor braking. This chopper is made of a power stack (IGBTs and diodes)
identical to those used for phase legs.
Chopper resistors are located outside the cubicle.

2.4.6 dV/dt-Filter (Option)

This filter is either standard or optional depending on the rating as described in Section 2.2.3.
The 3-level topology used in
the MV7000 Drive results in
smaller output step voltages
(1/2 of the DC link voltage). Vdc
The phase-to-phase output Vdc/2
voltage THD is 1/2 of a
conventional 2-level inverter. Filter output
Typically, there is no need for voltage
Zoom effect
a sinusoidal filter.
The dV/dt-filter is used to limit: Vdc/2

• the dV/dt. dV/dt value: see datasheet

• inverter output voltage
overshoots.
Figure 2-16 Effect of the dV/dt filter

The dV/dt-filter is a 3-phase LCR filter connected to the

inverter output. The filter star point is connected to DC link
middle point.
The dV/dt-filter cut-off frequency is above 20 kHz
(a sinusoidal filter’s cut-off frequency would be only about
1 kHz), which means that the drive is suitable for
applications requiring high dynamic performance.

• Drive Data Manager (keypad) on the front door.

This low voltage compartment can be safely accessed during operation.

Figure 2-18 MV73xx Control Cabinet

2.4.7.1 Controller and remote I/O unit

The basic task of the controller is to control the sequences, safeties and regulation including control
of motor speed and torque. Therefore, it is acquiring signals from various current and voltage
(optionally: speed) measurements. As a result, it is gating the inverter IGBTs accordingly.
Additional tasks of the controller include control of the incoming AC supply breaker, protection of
motor and converter, auxiliaries and the interface to the customer application software.
Non-time-critical I/O units are connected to PEC controller rack through Ethernet link.

2.4.7.2 Low voltage auxiliaries

Voltage supply for control is 230V. A UPS is required, not included in MV7000 drive.
The control cabinet also includes relays used to control circuit breakers, contactors, and DC supply
for internal measuring devices.

2.4.7.3 Drive Data Manager

 (keypad)
The Drive Data Manager provides a local man machine interface.
Refer to User Manual sections 4 and 5 for keypad details.

2.4.8 Cooling unit
The cooling unit comprises the following devices:

• Pump and flow control.

• Deionization system and water conductivity control.
• Raw water / deionized water heat exchanger, (as an option, no exchanger, deionized water is
cooled through an external air to water exchanger).
• Expansion tank.
A pump circulates deionized water. Optionally, a second pump can be implemented for redundancy
and changeover.
Water flow monitoring is implemented in order to check that the minimum flow required to cool the
power parts is maintained. An alarm / fault signal is sent to the controller in case of insufficient flow.
Water conductivity measurement enables to control the water deionization system valve with a
hysteresis type command: As soon as the water conductivity is above a high level value, the valve is
opened so that water flows through a mixed bed resin cartridge. Water conductivity decreases until
the low level value is reached, at which the valve is closed. If the water conductivity is higher than a
maximum value, a fault status is sent to the controller.
An expansion tank is used to set static pressure of water circuit.

A raw water / deionized water heat

exchanger is used for transferring heat
from inverter heatsinks to raw water.
Deionized water outlet temperature of
cooling unit is monitored, with an alarm /
fault managed by the controller.

Refer to section 6 of MV7000 user

manual and the manual of cooling unit
manufacturer for details about cooling
unit.

2.6 EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT

2.6.1 MV Circuit Breaker

To protect the drive, MV7000 must be able to open and close the upstream MV circuit breaker (out
of MV7000 product scope). This breaker must open and the arc be extinguished within 100 ms of
receiving a trip signal from MV7000. While the breaker may be opened (tripped) by others, too, the
closing must only be actuated through MV7000.
A contact indicating the circuit breaker Open/Close status shall be available for the MV7000 control.
The MV circuit breaker must be included in the key interlock system by project engineering.
If the MV circuit breaker for the installation is not supplied by CONVERTEAM, contact
CONVERTEAM for details of the circuit breaker specification.

2.6.2 Precharge auxiliary supply

The precharge/premagnetization circuit for the main transformer is energized from the auxiliary
supply. Premagnetization of a DFE drive is feasible only if there is a fixed (and known) phase shift
between MV and LV supplies (otherwise use the precharge function only).
Premagnetization of an AFE drive on request.

2.6.3 Input Transformer

MV7000 SA DFE is fed by a 12 or 24-pulse isolation transformer for harmonic filtering and common
mode considerations. The transformer is sized for the harmonic contents of the rectifier input
currents. Its impedance is selected to limit the fault current in case of severe short circuits inside the
drive, until the drive protection trips the input MV circuit breaker.
If the input transformer for the installation is not supplied by CONVERTEAM, contact CONVERTEAM
for details of the transformer specification.

2.6.4 Motor Requirements

MV7000 drives are designed in such a way to suit to a new inverter duty motor.
For other motors, an optional filter can be provided.
If the motor for the installation is not supplied by CONVERTEAM, contact CONVERTEAM for details
of the motor specification.
