1. Problem Statement
A feed mixture consisting of 80% ethane and 20% ethylene (by mole) is complete vapor
and fed to distillation column at 3 bar. The feed flowrate is 400 kgmole/h. The flowrate of
top product is 78.5 kgmole/h, with 97 mol% ethylene and 3 mol% ethane. Assume a
column pressure drop of 0.2 bar. Simulate the distillation process using both DWTSU and
Rigorous methods and report the detailed results of the process. Analyze the difference
between the results using both simulation techniques.
2. Objectives
To understand and perform Simulation of two types of Distillation Column
Shortcut Method For Distillation and to determine the Minimum Reflux Ratio,
Minimum Stages and Actual Reflux Ratio or Actual Stages from Shortcut
Distillation Column.
To design the Rigorous Distillation Column for the sharp separation by using the
data from Shortcut Method
3. Background
In the Distillation column the feed of mixture of two will separate into two different streams
by heat or Energy. Like Ethane and Ethylene are separated in Distillation Column by
difference in their boiling temperature.
4
Property package used is Peng-Robison because both are hydrocarbon and are in gaseous
state as shown above.

6. Aspen HYSYS Solution
First we select the components which are given in the problem as show in above.
6
Figure 5 Shortcut Method
First we solve the Shortcut Method to find the Reflux Ratio and Number of plates
for Distillation.
7
Figure 7 Specification of SC variables
Specify the variables of the Shortcut Method and put the RR= -1.3 because it will
give us the Minimum and Actual Reflux Ratio.
And with Pressure drop of 0.2 bar in the condenser.
8
Figure 9 Results of Shortcut Mole Fraction
As the mole fraction of the Ethylene is 0.969814 which is less than 0.97 so will
use the result of the Shortcut Method in Rigorous Method.
So same feed will enter the column but at this time in Rigorous Column.
9
Figure 11 Input for Rigorous Column - 1
10
Figure 13 Input for Rigorous Column - 3
So the RR and No. of stages from SC are put in Rigorous Column for the accurate
calculations.
So from the results we can see that it has little high mole fraction of Ethylene so we
have to rectify that by changing something.
11
Figure 15 Purity of Ethylene -1
12
Figure 18 Purity of Ethylene – 4
So to reach to over objective we have to change some thing in order to reach the
specific purity of ethylene so before that we are specifying the Aspen for Ethylene
purity.
13
Figure 20 Results
As at RR = 11.4048 the purity is not equal to the 97% of ethylene by changing the to 10.6358
we can get at perfect 0.97 %.
