Extra Points

Sishencong 四神聪
Location - this name refers to four points located on the vertex, 1 cun anterior, posterior and lateral to
Baihui (GV 20) respectively.
Indications
1. Headache, vertigo
2. Insomnia, forgetfulness
3. Epilepsy
Needling Method - puncture transversely 0.5 - 0.8 cun; prick to induce bleeding.

Yintang 印堂
Location - midway between the medial ends of the two eyebrows.
Indications
1. Headache, vertigo
2. Insomnia, forgetfulness
3. Epilepsy, infantile convulsions
4. Nosebleed, sinusitis
Needling Method - puncture transversely 0.3 - 0.5 cun; or prick to induce bleeding.

Yuyao 鱼腰
Location - in the center of the eyebrow, in the depression directly above the pupils when the eyes are
looking straight forward.
Indications
1. Pain in the supraorbital region, twitching of the eyelids, ptosis of the eyelids, red and painful eyes,
cataract and deviated mouth and eyes
Needling Method - puncture transversely 0.3 - 0.5 cun,

Taiyang 太陽
Location - in the depression about one finger breadth posterior to the midpoint between the lateral end of
the eyebrow and the outer canthus.
Indications
1. Headache, vertigo, insomnia
2. Disease of the eye, wry face
Needling Method - puncture transversely or obliquely 0.3 - 0.5 cun; or prick to induce bleeding.

Erjian 耳尖
Location - on the top region of the ear, fold the ear forward, the point is at the apex of the ear.
Indications
1. Swollen and painful ayes, hordeolum
2. Swelling and pain in the throat
3. Headache, vertigo
Needling Method - puncture perpendicularly 0.1 - 0.2 cun; or prick to induce bleeding.

Qiuhou 球后
Location - at the junction of the lateral 1/4 and medial 3/4 of the infraorbital margin.
Indications
1. Eye diseases
Needling Method - gently push the eyeball upward, insert the needle slightly downwards towards
the orbital margin for 0.5 - 1.5 cun without lifting and thrusting.
Shangyingxiang 上迎香
Location - on the region of the face, at the junction of the cartilage of the ala nasi and the nasal concha,
near the upper end of the nasolabial groove.
Indications
1. Nasal obstruction, sunusitis, soreness and furuncles in the nasal region.
Needling Method - puncture obliquely and centrally upward 0.3 - 0.5 cun.

Neiyingxiang 内迎香
Location - inside of the nostrils, on the mucosal membrane at the junction of the cartilage of the ala nasi
and the nasal concha.
Indication
1. Disease of the nose, inflammation of the throat, swelling and pain in the eyes
Needling Method - prick to induce bleeding using a long filiform needle, this method is
contraindicated in patients with a bleeding disorder.

Jiachengjiang 夹承浆
Location - on the face, 1 cun lateral to Chengjiang (CV 24).
Indications
1. Swelling and pain in dental caries, deviated mouth and eyes
Needling Method - puncture obliquely or transversely 0.3 - 0.8 cun.

Jinjin 金津, Yuye 玉液


Location - in the mouth, on the two veins under the tongue, Jinjin is on the left, Yuye is on the right.
Indications
1. Sore mouth, aphasia with a stiff tongue, swelling of the tongue
2. Vomiting
3. Diabetes
Needling Method - prick to induce bleeding.

Hai quan 海泉
Location: in the center of the frenulum of the tongue between jinjin and yuye
Indication:

Qianzheng 牵正
Location - 0.5 - 1.0 cun anterior to the ear lobe.
Indications
1. Deviated mouth and ulcers in the mouth
Needling Method - puncture obliquely 0.5 - 1.0 cun.

Yiming 翳明
Location - on the neck, 1 cun posterior to Yifeng (TE 17).
Indications
1. Headache, vertigo, insomnia and tinnitus
Needling Method - puncture perpendicularly 0.5 - 1.0 cun.
An mian 安眠
Location:midpoint between Sj 17 and Gb 20
Indication: insomnia , vertigo, headache, palpitation and mental disorders.
Bai lao 百劳
Location: 2 cun above Du 14, 1 cun lateral to the midline
Indication: scrofula, cough, asthma, whooping cough, neck rigidity.
Ding chuan 定喘
Location: 0.5 to 1 cun lateral to the depression below the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra.
Indication:
Asthma, wheezing, cough, urticarial, pain of the upper back.

Extra Points of the Trunk

Zigong 子宫
Location - 4 cun below the center of umbilicus, 3 cun lateral to Zhongji (CV 3).
Indications
1. Prolapsed uterus, irregular menstruation, manalgia, uterine bleeding and infertility.
Needling Method - puncture perpendicularly 0.5 - 0.8 cun.
San jiao jiu 三角灸
Location: On the lower abdomen. Construct an equi- lateral triangle of which the apex is the umbilicus
(Shenque REN-8), and the sides are equal to the length of the patient's smile. These points are located at the
three points of the triangle.
Indication: Chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, pain around the umbilicus, shan disorder, running piglet qi
arising from the umbilicus.
Ti Tuo 提托
Location: On the lower abdomen, 4 cun lateral to the midline, level with Guanyuan REN-4.
Indication: Prolapse of the uterus, dysmenorrhoea, abdominal distention and pain.
Needling method: a. Perpendicular insertion 0.8 to 1.2 cun; b. For prolapse of the uterus, the following needling
method may be employed. Direct the needle from Tituo (N-CA-4) towards Qugu REN-2 through the muscular
layer. Then rotate the needle until it wraps the muscle fibres, firmly pull it upwards and outwards, and tape it to
the skin in this raised position for 20-30 minutes.
Jiaji 夹脊(华佗夹脊)
Location - a group of 34 points on both sides of the spinal column, 0.5 cun lateral to the lower
th
border of each spinous process from the first thoracic to the 5 lumbar vertebra. There are 17 points on each
side.
Indications - there are many indications for the use of these points. The indications of different parts of the
spine are as follows.

Needling Method - puncture obliquely 0.3 - 0.5 cun; use caution when inserting the needle to prevent
damaging the viscera or causing pnemothorax; the plum-needling technique can be utilized instead.
Weiwanxiashu 胃管下俞
Location - 1.5 cun lateral to the lower border of the spinous process of the 8th thoracic vertebra.
Indications
1. Stomachache, pain in the abdomen chest and hypochondriac region
2. Diabetes
Needling Method - puncture obliquely 0.3 - 0.5 cun.
Huan men 患门
Location 1.5 cun lateral to the prominence of the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra (T5).
Indication: The five taxations and the seven injuries, steaming bone disorder, tidal fever, night sweating,
agitation and heat, poor appetite, heaviness of the limbs, fatigue, lack of strength, cough, dyspnoea.

Yaoyan 腰眼
Location - in the depression on the lower border of the 4th lumbar vertebra, 3.5 cun lateral to the posterior
midline.
Indications
1. Lumbago
2. Irregular menstruation, morbid leucorrhea
Needling Method - puncture perpendicular 0.5 - 1.0 cun.
Shiqizhui 十七椎
Location - on the posterior midline, in the depression below the spinous process of the 5th lumbar vertebra.
Indications
1. Irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, uterine bleeding
2. Back and leg pain, paralysis of the lower extremities
Needling Method - puncture perpendicular 0.5 - 1.0 cun.

Yaoqi 腰奇
Location - 2 cun above the coccyx, in the depression of the sacral horn.
Indications
1. Epilepsy, headache, insomnia
2. Constipation
Needling Method - puncture transversely upward 1.0 - 1.5 cun.
