Demigods and Magicians is a novel authored by Richard Russell Riordan Jr.

or
better known as Rick Riordan. Riordan was entitled “storyteller of the gods” by Publisher
Weekly. This is the result of his works with mythical gods. Riordan wrote about both of
his recognized series The Kane Chronicles and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The
book is about Carter and Sadie Kane, Kane siblings, a family line of Egyptian magicians
and Percy Jackson, and his girlfriend, Annabeth Chase. They have all met each other in
a series of dangerous events. They find out this is the work of Egyptian sorcerer, Setne,
with the aspiration of devouring the gods to receive the gift of immortality.

It all began when Carter Kane introduces himself as a magician in the House of
Life. Carter, together with other magicians, ceases Egyptian gods and monsters from
provoking the contemporary world. Carter tracked down a magical disturbance in Long
Island for several weeks. Since the mortals have started to report about the Long Island
swamp monster, Carter decides to investigate for himself. He theorized that it was the
Egyptian crocodile god, Sobek, nevertheless considering that Sobek himself promised
that he would leave them alone.

As Carter anchored his eyes upon glowing yellow eyes and gold jewelry around a
tremendous neck arise from the river he was in, the monstrous jaws of the creature
swallowed him whole. As Carter prepares to speak the right hieroglyphic symbol to bust
his way out of this beast, the creature lurched upward and threw Carter to the grass as
the crocodile somehow disappeared. Suddenly, there was this boy, who looked older
than Carter, maybe seventeen year old, holding a double edged bronzed sword which
caught Carter’s attention. Carter knew that he had to be a magician, but everything
about the boy was not Egyptian. The boy wore a t-shirt with writing on it, camp, but he
stops, as he struggles to read the rest. The boy wondered who was Carter, asking him if
he was a half-blood. Knowing that he himself was a mixed race, Carter was offended
and angered. With the hieroglyphic symbol still at the tip of his tongue, he mistakenly
says the words. Before his eyes, a waving fist, the size of a dishwasher punches the
camper boy of his feet.
As Carter tries to help the camper boy, a twenty foot wall of water slams him
back into the river, but Carter stands up just in time to deflect the attack of the camper
boy. As Carter’s blood gushes out of his arm, he shouts at the camper boy that’s he
didn’t like the way we was called half-blood. Camper boy responded by saying that he
knew Carter wasn’t normal, he couldn’t be, he had to be a demigod. The Duat, the
shadow realm, pulled Carter into something deeper, Greek, not Egyptian. As they heard
the screaming of a child, they both ran. Running behind Camper Boy, Carter grew tired
of calling him that, so he questioned Camper Boy about his name. Camper Boy and
Carter both knew that names were dangerous. Camper Boy hesitated, so Carter told
Camper Boy that his name is Carter. Camper Boy replied by saying his name was
Percy. As they were going to attack, Carter says that the crocodile is immortal, but
because of his own victories with other immortal beings, Percy doesn’t hesitate to
attack.

The children could have thought that the creature attacking them was a wild
elephant or even a crazed FedEx driver. Impressed with the bravery of young mortals,
knowing that the human minds could not comprehend what was actually happening,
Carter charged at the children, warning them to run, as he threw a hieroglyphic for pain.
During the moment the crocodile’s skin smoked, Percy and Carter talked about a plan to
defeat this crocodile. Carter had to distract the massive crocodile while Percy tries to
get the necklace of the crocodile so it would turn to regular size.

Carter knew that the trick he was going to use would burn him up, but he used
the last of his magical energy to turn to a sacred animal of Horus, a falcon. Carter’s
visions and senses grew. Percy had started a storm, now Carter was sure that Percy
wasn’t a magician, no magician could control that much water. Carter dived to the
crocodile, but as he reached the clasp of a necklace, he turned human. Percy couldn’t
control the water for long, so the longer Carter took to unclasp the necklace, the weaker
Percy got. Carter tried another trick, but it wasn’t working. With all his strength, Carter
punched the basket hieroglyph as the clasp made a satisfying click. As the crocodile
turned normal, and ran off, Carter took the necklace and realized that the crocodile was
a three feet baby crocodile that was probably abandoned.
Percy and Carter went to eat lunch as Carter explained the story of the necklace.
The necklace was enchanted, and any reptile that wore it would turn into the Son of
Sobek. Carter kept the necklace in the Duat, where it would be safe. Carter also kept
the crocodile knowing that it would be better off in his giant pool back in Brooklyn. They
both knew it would be better if they both stayed away from each other. Carter knew that
someone had created the creature to attract their attention, so Carter drew the Eye of
Horus on the hand of Percy as it turned blue and vanished into thin air. Carter explained
to Percy that if he said his name, Carter would know where to find Percy.

Annabeth’s day couldn’t have gotten worse until she spotted the two-headed
monster. She was heading to Percy’s place to go dinner, until she spotted the monster.
It looked as if a wolf and a lion were lashed together, wedged into hermit crab shell.
Attacking it in front of a subway station wasn’t a first choice, but being a child of Athena,
she had to. The monster suddenly just walked away, leaving Annabeth in shock. The
monster might not have attacked her, but if the monster had monster elsewhere, she
had to find out.

Annabeth followed the monster into a train, where it started to glow neon
symbols. It was Greek letters, astrological signs, and Egyptian hieroglyphics. She
remembered about the encounter Percy had told her a few weeks ago. She started to
feel nauseous the closer she got to the monster. She even felt a tugging sensation in
her gut, pulling her toward the monster. When she caught up with the monster, the aura
was so strong, that some mortals started to faint. Every conscious passenger rushed
out as soon as the doors opened. When Annabeth shouted at it, it roared back so hard
that the unconscious started to crawl out. Annabeth figured it out. The monster was
looking for a third head. Annabeth started to understand the monster. She knew that the
monster wasn’t Greek, so she asked it if it was Egyptian. Angered at the comment, the
monster growled and prepared to spring. Annabeth was able to buy herself few seconds
by convincing then that they insulted each other. The place was empty, but a flash of
light caught Annabeth’s eye. She saw a blonde girl waving a wooden staff at what
seems to be a black Labrador retriever. Annabeth realized that this was the third piece.
For a moment they were all there – two girls and two monsters. The dog howled, and
the lion-wolf-crab came to meet them, but the girl shouted and golden hieroglyphics.
The dog staggered backwards, choking, as if it swallowed a ball.

Annabeth struggled to keep the wolf-lion-crab down, smacking it with twenty

pounds of architecture books from her backpack. Slammed to a seat, Annabeth was
dragged to Rockaway Beach by the girl. At her side were a staff and ivory wand with
hieroglyphics and pictures of un-Greek monsters belonging to the girl. The girl captured
the dog monster around magical gold ropes as she dragged it with Annabeth. Annabeth
demanded the name of the girl. The girl tugged a smile and said, “Sadie Kane”.
Annabeth replied, “Annabeth Chase”.

Annabeth told Sadie that she reminds him of what her boyfriend, Percy, told her
a few weeks ago. Percy told Annabeth of a boy who also cast hieroglyphic spells like
Sadie did. Sadie immediately remembered her brother talking about a big crocodile
monster. Annabeth, asking Sadie if her brother was Carter, explained Camp Half-Blood
and her adventures to Sadie. Sadie returns the favor by explains who she is. Sadie
fiddles with her pendant. There was a three headed monster sticking out a scepter on it.
Annabeth remembered that there was a god who used it and the three headed beast
was his symbol. The god was Greek, but also from somewhere in Egypt. Sadie
remembered that Greek Alexander the Great ruled over Egypt. Annabeth also
remembered that when Alexander died, his general Ptolemy took over and wanted the
Egyptians to accept him as their pharaoh, so his mashed Greek and Egyptian gods
together.

Annabeth suddenly realized that the scepter isn’t trying to reassemble itself, but it
was trying to find its master. Both realizing what might happen, the golden ropes
exploded like a grenade. Annabeth tried to find a weapon. Laying her hands on Sadie’s
curved wand, the ivory burned like dry ice, turning into what she usually used, a
Celestial bronze dagger. Annabeth walked to Sadie, who was frowning and asking
about the weapon. Annabeth told her that it was her ivory wand. Sadie explained that
magical items have minds of their own and tells Annabeth to keep it. Annabeth pointed
to where the dog monster went. Sadie said that it was going toward the storm, but
Annabeth struggled to understand. Sadie got something from her bag and smeared it on
Annabeth’s eyes. Annabeth opened her eyes to a world of hieroglyphics and Greek
letters and a world awash in color. Sadie explained that this is the Duat, the magical
side of the world.

Sadie pointed to the apartment building which was attracting red, which mean
evil and chaos. Sadie created a force field to protect them from a storm and turned into
a bird. Annabeth had to distract the god while Sadie attacked the staff monster.
Annabeth suddenly remembered the name of the god, though calling it was dangerous,
because names had power. Annabeth shouted, “Serapis!” The storm slowed and as the
god shouted, “Who dares interrupt my triumphal rise!” Serapis offered Annabeth a
chance to his high priestess, thinking she was a hero and magician, but she had to
sacrifice her life and soul. Serapis explained that he a mere village god who no one has
heard of, but Ptolemy had Greek and Egyptian priest do incantations on him, making
him the god Serapis. He also explained that Ptolemy tried to become immortal, but
when his magic backfired, his family was cursed, but the magician who awoke Serapis
think he could do better and be a god himself. Annabeth stabbed the monster in the
shell, causing magma to come out, but at the same moment Sadie cast her spell,
hoping to bind him with the power of Isis. The staff monster walked until it was able to
reach it master. Sadie cast another spell, making the brick wall like a wave that buried
him under tons of wreckage. They were both able to escape. Annabeth wondered how
her backpack was so light. The books were gone, but she saw a New York Yankees
cap, which she was sure was sent from her mother. Annabeth wore her cap turning
invisible. Since Sadie was out of magic, Annabeth had to attack the staff, knowing that it
would stop Serapis. Serapis found them and Sadie started to bind Serapis in Egyptian
and Greek spells, which Annabeth taught her. Annabeth had to attack the future part of
the staff, the dog. Sadie knew the name of the magician who summoned him, Setne.
Annabeth grabbed the dagger from the shell of the monster and stabbed the dog in the
neck. It cracked the shell and dragged the wolf and lion into the shell, causing a fireball
in the god’s hand. Serapis tried to pull the dagger out, but glowed more. The fireball
dragged the god into its vortex as he vanished.
Percy was explaining all the things behind everything that had happen.
Annabeth told Percy about who was behind all this trouble. Sadie explained that it was
Setne, an evil sorcerer who came back from the dead. Setne also stole a powerful
sorcerer sheet, mixing Egyptian and Greek myths, trying to find a way to be a god
himself. Four weeks later, Annabeth went to Percy’s to tell her about a vision from her
mom, Athena, telling that trouble was starting in Governors Island. Percy tried to call
Carter by saying his name, but it was useless. A hurricane slammed into Governors
Island leaving Percy and Annabeth stranded with Setne and Flying Death Snakes.
Annabeth wore her invisibility cap and vanished, leaving Percy with Flying Snakes.
Setne used spells on Annabeth, rendering her invisibility cap useless.

Setne summoned Wadjet, queen of cobras, protector of Lower Egypt. He

destroys her by consuming her essence and she is sucked into her crown. Setne stood
over Percy and Annabeth, stabbing Setne right in his guts, Percy hoped that Setne
would die, but he was passed the point of dying. Riptide, the Celestial bronze sword of
Percy was devoured by Setne also. Setne explained his plan before trying to destroy
the Greek demigods. He was to get the crowns of Lower and Upper Egypt to rule the
world and become a god. While Percy thought of plans to escape and defeat the
sorcerer, Setne was crushed by a camel, while two falcons flew over heads. Annabeth
was thrilled to see those falcons knowing it was Sadie and Carter. Just as they falcons
dove to rip Setne’s face, he disappeared into a swirl of rain. Carter apologized and
explained that the storm messed up their magic.

Sadie and Carter both explain the details about the Egyptians crowns. The
pschent is the doubled crown of Egypt. Setne has the deshret, the bottom half of the
crown, but he is also after the hedjet, the upper part of the crown. If Setne was to wear
both of the crowns, he would be pharaoh, but in this case, Setne was creating a very
special pschent, the Crown of Ptolemy. They all figure out where Setne plans to finish
work, while thinking of a plan to mix Egyptian and Greek magic to defeat Setne. They
teach each other Greek and Egyptian spells so they could all use it. Carter turned
invisible with Annabeth’s cap, leaving the three to face Setne, who exploded the ground
once he saw them. Setne walked away, with the demigods and magicians, covered in
mud and dirt. Setne summoned Nekhbet, the vulture goddess, and protector of the
Upper Crown. Sadie called out a Greek spell, which not only dazed Setne, but it
knocked of the crown of Nekhbet. Carter yelled an Egyptian spell, which attacked Setne
again, but with both the crowns in his possession, Setne vanished. They all explain to
Nekhbet all that has happened and since her crown is no longer with her, she doesn’t
have the same power she used to have. Nekhbet wants Percy to be her host, she will
live in the body of Percy, which could melt his brain or leave Percy with incredible
power. With the consent of Percy, Nekhbet went into Percy, letting him see thousands
of years of memories.

Setne only had to chant the deification ceremony while wearing the crown of
Ptolemy to become a god. Setne had already started to chant it. Setne started to taunt
Carter about his father, angering him, and making him smash Setne with the same blue
fist he did with Percy. Setne was knocked down, and the only visible part of Setne was
the crown. The earth rumbled and Setne rose once again. Angered with the mockery of
Setne, Carter started to glow a blue aura and he levitated of the ground as the avatar of
Horus took over him. Setne didn’t look terrified, and he did a gesture, shattering Carter’s
avatar leaving Carter collapsed and motionless. Setne exploded a ring of fire around
him, but with Nekhbet in Percy, he took on the avatar of a vulture and protected the
girls. Annabeth started to chant Egyptian spells, and Percy grabbed Setne into the sky
with his claws before Setne could finish his spell. Nekhbet scanned through Percy’s
memories, offended that Percy turned down godhood. Setne not only invited Sadie into
his plans, but he offered Percy a chance to be a god. Setne was stalling Percy, as a
cold explosion blew up in the sky, Percy was falling.

Percy landed into the water, and being the son of Poseidon, he was filled with
warmth and healing. He started to choke Setne and drown him, and the crown Setne
wore glowed as the water steamed. Nekhbet told Percy to bring Setne into land were
his friends could help. Percy yanked his hand into Setne’s mouth until he retrieved his
ballpoint pen, his sword. Just as Percy pulled his pen, magical swirls started to come
out of Setne, releasing the magic he tried to absorb. Sadie and Annabeth started to
chant magical spells in unison. The Crown of Ptolemy rolled of Setne’s head and Carter
threw his magical rope. As soon as the rope touched Setne, Percy was blinded from the
light it released. Setne and the rope were gone. All that was left was a snow globe
which was a miniature model of Governors Island. Running and swimming across the
area was a termite-sized man in a purple trench coat. Setne was trapped in a cheap
souvenir.

Percy questioned on how and why Setne was trapped in a souvenir. Carter said
that the idea stuck with him when he set the trap and the magic used what was Carter
thinking of. Afraid of what Annabeth did with Setne, asked how she was able to blast
Setne. Sadie said she told Annabeth her ren, her secret name, which would give
Annabeth access to Sadie’s experiences and abilities. Knowing someone’s ren, you
could control them. The crown was all that was left, but Percy knew that it was a test
from the goddess, wondering if they would turn down immortality. Carter knew that the
crown would be safe in their place, knowing his Uncle Amos had the most secure
vaults, but he knew it wouldn’t be one hundred percent safe. Others could try hybrid
magic, causing tremors in the Duat, modern world, and their sanity. Carter wrapped the
crown in a cloth, ready to keep it and give it to his uncle.

They knew it was safer with their worlds as far from each other as possible. This
was goodbye. Percy hated making new friends, just to say goodbye at the end. They all
packed their things, ready to go their separate ways.
