 What is Potentiometer ?

Potentiometer (POT) is one type of resistor whose resistance value can be adjusted
according to the needs of the electronic circuit or the needs of the user.

 The Size and Shape Potentiometer

Potentiometer has various resistance sizes, for example 5K ohms, 10K ohms, 50K ohms, 100K
ohms and so on. This component has 3 feet for the mono and 6 feet for the stereo.
While the Trimpot (trimer potentio) which looks rather flat, and how to rotate it must be trimmed
first using a screwdriver trim or other tool, even though the principle works just the same as the
potentiometer, the only difference is the shape.
1. Potentiometer (POT) is one type of resistor whose resistance value can be adjusted
according to the needs of the electronic circuit or the needs of the user
2. Dual gang: From the name of this pot it can be assumed what it is. It is nothing but two
pots with equal resistance and taper are combined on the same shaft. The two channels
are set in parallel.

3. Concentric pot: Here two pots are combined together on shafts placed ina concentric
manner. The advantage of using this type of pot is that two controls can be used in one
unit.
4. Multi turn pot: In an application where precion and good resolution of utmost
importance this type of pto is used. IT HAS a spindle, that actuates the slider, that can
turn upto 5, 10 or 20 times to imporove the precision.

1. Potentiometer Slider, a Potentiometer whose resistance value can be adjusted by shifting

the Wiper from left to right or from the bottom up according to its installation.
Usually use the thumb to move the wiper.
2. Rotary Potentiometer, a potentiometer whose resistance value can be adjusted by rotating
the wiper along a circular path. Usually use the thumb to turn the wiper.
Therefore, Rotary Potentiometers are often called Thumbwheel Potentiometers.
3. Trimmer Potentiometer, a potentiometer that is small in shape and must use special tools
such as screwdrivers (screwdrivers) to turn it. This Trimmer Potentiometer is usually paired on
the PCB and rarely adjusted.
1. Slide pot: This is the basic type of a linear pot. They have a single resistive strip over which the wiper
slides linearly. They have a good precision and are moistly made from conducive plastic.
2. Motorized fader: As the name suggests, the movement of wiper of this pot is controlled by a motor, and
hence its resistance.
3. Multi turn pot: In an application where precion and good resolution of utmost importance this type of pto
is used. IT HAS a spindle, that actuates the slider, that can turn upto 5, 10 or 20 times to imporove the
precision.

 How the potentiometer formula ?

Voltage Divider
Potentiometers can be used as voltage dividers. To use the potentiometer as a voltage
divider, all the three pins are connected. One of the outer pins is connected to the GND,
the other to Vcc and the middle pin is the voltage output.

When the potentiometer is used as a voltage divider, the wiper position determines the
output voltage. When you have the potentiometer connected this way, you have the
following circuit:

Basically, the voltage divider is used to turn a large voltage into a smaller one.

The output voltage can be calculated using the following equation

obtained from Ohm’s Law:

 Potentiometer Functions
With the ability to change resistance or resistance, potentiometers are often
used in electronic circuits or equipment with the following functions:

1. As a regulator of the volume of various Audio / Video equipment such

as Amplifiers, Car Tape, DVD Player.
2. As a Voltage Regulator in the Power Supply Circuit
3. As a Voltage Divider
4. TRIAC Switch Application
5. Used as a Joystick on the Tranduser
6. As a Signal Level Controller
