1. Include a description of the elements that form ionic bonds.

Ionic bond is one of the known chemical bonds which is usually

formed between a positively charged ion; normally a metal and a
negatively charged ion which is a nonmetal. This is basically an
electron transfer. The concept of the formation ionic bond is that
electrons transfer between the outer shells of adjacent atoms. For
example, each element in Group 1 except hydrogen gives up an
electron having a +1 charge. On the other hand, elements from Group
17 has the ability to gain an electron having a -1 charge. Therefore, it
can be concluded that elements from Group 1 and 17 can have an attraction to form an ionic compound
in 1:1 ratio. Alkaline earth metals or elements from Group 2 can also form ionic binds having a +2 charge
with oxygen and sulfur having -2 charge.

2. A detailed review of how ionic bonds are being formed

Ionic bonds forms when the

valence or the outermost electrons of
one atom are transferred to another
atom. The elements in the periodic
table which loses electron becomes
positively charged and those elements
which gains electrons become
negatively charged. The opposing
charges which are formed are being
attracted by electrostatic forces and repulsion between same charges orient ions where every positively
charged ion is being surrounded by negatively charged ion and vice versa. Charges are of alternate pattern
and balance one another and the overall charge of the compound being formed is neutral or zero.
Typically, it is also formed when the electronegativity difference of the atoms is greater than 2.0.

3. The properties of ionically bonded compounds in relation to the structure and bonding in these
types of compounds

Ionically bonded compounds usually form crystals. They are hard because the positive and negative
ions are strongly attracted to each other and they have high boiling points and melting points. High
temperatures are then required to overcome the attraction between the positive and negative ions in
the ionic compounds. At the same time, they conduct electricity when dissolved in water. The
dissociated ions in water conducts electric charge within the solution. And lastly, they are also good
insulators for ionic solids are tightly bound to each other.
