Some of the most important precautions are given below. However, we cannot warnyou of every conceivable hazard that
can arise in performing maintenance orrepairs. Only you can decide whether ornot you should perform a giventask.
Be sure the engineis off before you beginany maintenance orrepairs. This will reduce the possibilityof several hazards:
To reduce the possibility of a fire or explosion, be careful when working aroundgasoline. Use only a nonflammable
solvent, not gasoline,to clean parts. Keepall cigarettes, sparks, and flames awayfrom allfuel-related parts.

SERVICE RULES
1. Use genuine Honda or Honda-recommended parts and lubricants or their equivalents. Parts that do notmeet Honda's
design specifications may damage the engine.
2. Use the special tools designed for the product.
3. Install new gaskets, O-rings, etc. when reassembling.
4. When torquing bolts or nuts, begin with larger-diameter or inner bolts firstand tighten to the specified torque diagonally,
unless a particular sequence is specified.
5. Clean parts in cleaning solvent upon disassembly. Lubricate any sliding surfaces before reassembly.
6. After reassembly, check all parts for proper installation and operation.
7. Many screws used in thismachine are self-tapping. Be aware that cross-threading or overtightening these screws will
strip thethreads and ruin thehole.
8. Use only metric tools when servicing this engine. Metric bolts, nuts andscrews are not interchangeable with nonmetric
fasteners. The use of incorrect tools and fasteners will damage the engine.
9. Follow theinstructions represented by these symbols whenthey are used:

ENGINE OIL
Oil Level Check:
Check the engine oil level with theengine stopped and the engine
on a level surface.
1) Remove the oil fillercap, and wipe thedipstick clean.
2) Insert the dipstickin the oil fillerneck, but do not screw it in.
Remove the dipstick and check the oil level.
3) If the oil level isnear or below the lower limitmark on the
dipstick, fill with the recommended oil tothe upper limit mark. L
Do not overfill.
4) lighten the oil filler cap securely.

A dirty air filterwill restrict air flow to the
carburetor, reducing
engine performance. If the filter operated
is in dusty areas, clean
the air filter more often thanspecified i n the MAINTENANCE
SCHEDULE. CASE
CAUTION:
Operating the engine without anair filter orwith a damaged
air filter, will allow dirt to enter the
engine, causing rapid
engine wear. This type of damage is notcovered b y t h e

Remove carbon or other depositswith a stiff wire brush. GAP / WIRE BRUSH
CAUTION:
A loose sparkplug can become veryhot and candamage
the engine. Overtightening thespark plug can damage
the threadsin thecylinder barrel.
