Q2a. What do you understand by short term and long term deflections? [8+17]
Write the factors affecting these deflections. How are they taken care in RCC design?
b. Calculate ultimate moment of resistance of a T-beam for the following data :
width of flange=1500mm , depth of flange =100mm , overall depth of beam=600mm,
width of rib=300mm and area of tension reinforcement =3375 mm2 , effective
cover= 65mm . M15 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel are used.
Q3a. Design a rectangular RCC continuous beam of four equal span of length [17+8]
3.5 m each. The imposed load acting on beam is 20kN/m. Use M20 grade concrete
and Fe415 grade of steel.
Show reinforcement details in the beam with the help of neat diagrams.
b. Write the steps for designing rectangular beams for torsion as per IS code provisions.
Q4a. A RCC slab is to be provided for a room measuring 5.8m x 4.2 m c/c. [17+8]
The slab carries live load of 4kN/m2 and floor finish of 1kN/m2 . Using M20
grade concrete and Fe500 grade steel design the slab for the corners held down
condition taking two opposites longer edges as continuous edges. Draw neat
sketches showing reinforcement in bottom and top of slab.
b. Explain the rules for determining the effective span of longitudinally supported stairs
as per IS 456. Also show reinforcement details in a longitudinally spanned flight of
staircase.
Q5a. Explain the different failure modes of a short eccentrically loaded column [8+17]
column in detail.
b. Design the reinforcement of a short column of size 300 mm x 400 mm and
unsupported length of 3.2 m subjected to a factored axial load of 1400kN and
factored moment Mux about major axis of 130 kNm and Muy about minor axis of
60 kNm . Adopt M30 concrete and Fe500 grade steel . Take effective cover as 60
mm.
Refer design charts given in Fig. 1 & Fig. 2. The charts give interaction curves for
p/fck varies from 0.02 to 0.26.
Q6. Design a rectangular sloped footing for column of size 500mm x 250 mm , [25]
carrying a load of 1000kN. The safe bearing capacity of soil is 250kN/m2. Use M25
concrete and Fe415 steel. Apply all checks and draw reinforcement details.
