The Tag Browser

Use the Tag Browser to:

z browse the tag database and select a tag from the editor you’re working in

z edit or add an HMI tag

z add a new folder

z import tags from PLC databases into the project’s tag database.

When you configure a graphic object that uses controls, you can open the tag browser from the Connections tab of the
object’s Properties dialog box. You can also open the tag browser from the Property Panel, and from any editor that uses
tag assignments (such as the Data Log Model editor and the Alarms editor).
The tag browser is divided into two sections. The left side displays the hierarchy of the folders for the HMI tag database
and the right side displays the tags in the selected folder. Each device shortcut (in RSLinx Enterprise) or OPC topic (in
RSLinx Classic) is represented by a folder.

Folders
Select a folder from the tree structure in the left pane.
Offline
If you are using RSLinx Classic, the Offline file shows tags in a PLC program stored on disk. If the OPC topic has
access to symbols, you can browse for them in the Offline folder. For details, see RSLinx Classic help.
If you are using RSLinx Enterprise, the Offline folder displays tags in an RSLogix .acd file.
Online
The Online folder displays the device's online tags.
Contents of
Select a tag from the list; all tags in the selected folder are displayed.
Tag filter
To display only some of the tags in the folder, select a tag filter from the list.
Selected tag
The tag selected in the right pane is displayed.

To select a tag and copy it into the editor you were working in
1 Navigate to the relevant folder in the left pane and click to open it.
2 Select the tag in the list on the right and then click OK, or double-click the tag name. The tag name appears in the
Selected Tag box.
3. Click OK. The tag name will appear in the editor or tab and the Tag Browser will close.

Tip

z When you open the Tag Browser from the Tags in Model tab of the Data Log Model editor, you can select multiple tags.

To select and import tags from another database


1 Right click in the Contents pane. From the context menu, select Import PLC tags.
2 In the PLC Database Browser, choose a database.
3 Select tags from those listed for the selected database.
4 Click OK to copy the tags into the project database and return to the Tag browser.
Tags imported in this way can be treated like any other tags in the tag database.

To create a new tag


1 Right click in the Contents pane. From the context menu, select New HMI Tag.
2 Fill in the tag details in the Tag editor.
3 Click OK to save the tag to the tag database.

4 Click OK in the Tags dialog box to return to the editor you were working in.

Tip

z If the tag is to be in a folder, the folder must already exist. You can open the New Folder dialog box from the tag
browser by right clicking in the left pane and selecting New HMI Tag Folder. To specify a tag in a folder, type the folder
name as part of the tag name. For example, to add a tag named pump1 to the folder named NE_Corner, you would
type NE_Corner\pump1 as the tag name.

To edit an existing tag


1 Right click in the Contents pane. From the context menu, select Edit HMI Tag.
2 Make the required changes in the Tag editor.
3 Click OK to save the changes to the tag database.
4 Click OK in the tag browser to return to the editor you were working in.

To add a new folder


1 Right click in the Folders pane and select New HMI Tag Folder.
2 In the New Folder dialog box, type the name of the folder and then click OK.
