"THE FEASIBILITY of MANGO LEAVES as an ORGANIC FERTILIZER"

ABSTRACT:

Today, we observe that many farmers have difficulties in buying commercial fertilizers. The researcher made this
project for every farmers to know that mango fertilizer can also be an alternative fertilizer. Mango leaves is a
fertilizer which is safe, affordable and environmental-friendly. The researcher apply this to a pechay and know the
differences in putting this fertilizer. In my test, we observed that the time is not constant in growing of the plants.
The researcher use the pechay plant so that we could save more time.

The researcher used 500grams of mango leaves, mortar and pestle, and a mixer. Then, the reseacher get the
500grams of mango leaves and cut into pieces and mix it to a water. After that is put in the soil which the pechay
has planted. The reseacher recommend to the future investigators who would like to conduct this study to make a
wider research about mango. Its chemical content and how would it effect to the other plant.

Chapter 1

Introduction

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

Many of us now, are having low rate of harvesting crops due to some problems. It was so delicate for us,
consumers, if we will have nothing to get on. Fertilizers, which is specifically organic fertilizers are officially needed
by farmers. In fertilizer using this dried mango leaves, it may open the way to more successful work and improving
our economy. As we all know, that mango is the most popular fruit of the tropics and is called "The King of Asiatic
Fruits". It is regarded as a valuable item of diet and a household remedy. The mango is a fleshy drupe, variable in
size and shape, with varying mixtures of green , yellow, and red colors. The leaves contain the glucoside,
mangiferine. In India, cows were formerly fed mango leaves to obtain their urine euxanthic acid which is rich
yellow and has been used as a dye. In other words the solid waste of the cow became a fertilizer and we know that
this cow have eaten those dried leaves.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This study tries to find out if the mango dried leaves are effective as an organic fertilizers. It also states of whats
the difference between this organic fertilizers to those commercial fertilizers and other known organic
fertilizers.Specifically, it will try to answer the following questions:1.) Is this an effective organic fertilizer?2.) Is
there any side effects to the soil to where it applies?3)What are the advantages and disadvantages to this
studies?4)what is the different between this mango dried leaves as an organic fertilizer to those commercial
fertilizers?5)what kind of content does it has, that was so effective as an organic fertilizer?

HYPOTHESIS:

This study may able to relate in dried mango leaves as an alternative organic fertilizer.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study is significant in the sense that the researcher can find various uses of dried mango leaves as organic
fertilizer. As we heard the words, "organic fertilizer", we have an idea that it is more cheaper to buy. It also meant
that it is environmental-friendly. it has no side effects and cannot harm people that surrounds on it. Getting to
know this study, is so affordable rather than those expensive fertilizer.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS:

This study is limited only in determining the effect of the content of the dried mango leaves on the soil , and to be
a fertile soil on which I chose to investigate..

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Mango leaves are alternately arranged, lancedate (long and narrow) shaped, 6 to 16 inches in length, and the
leathery in texture. The leaves are pinkish, amber, or pale green-colored when young and become dark green at
maturity. This mango leaves are anti-asthmatic, antiseptic, antiviral, cardiotonic, emetic, expectorant, hypotensive
and laxative. it has the content which composed of: moisture 78.2%; protein 3.0% ;fat 0.4%;carbohydrates 16.5%;
fiber1.6%; ash 1.9%; calcium 29mg/100g; phosphorus 72mg; iron6.2mg; Vitamin A(carotene)1,490I.U.;
thiamine0.04mg; riboflavin0.06mg; niacin2.2mg; ascorbic acid 53mg/100g.

When used in reference to fertilizers, the word organic generally means that the nutrients contained in that
product are derived solely from the remains or by-product of an organism. When packaged as fertilizers, organic
products have the fertilizer ratio stated on the packaged label. Some organic fertilizer are high in one of the three
major nutrients9 nitrogen, phosphorus or potash) but low or zero in the other two. a few organic fertilizer
products can be purchased"fortified" for a higher nutrient analysis. Organic fertilizer depend on soil organisms to
break them down to release nutrients; therefore, most are effective when soil is moist and warm enough for the
organisms to be active. Nutrient release by micro bial activity, in general, occurs over a fairly long period of time.

Variations in leas nitrogen concentration per unit mass(Nm) and per unit are(Na), mass-to-area(Ma), total non-
constructural carbohydrates(ta), and photosynthetic capacity(maximum carboxylation rate, electron transport
capacity, rate of phosphate release in the triose phosphate utilization and dark respiration rate) were studied
within the digitized crowns of two 3-year-old mango trees(Mangifera indica L.) on La Reunion Island.

So as what has stated that it has a low phosphorus, zero potash and nitrogen concentration, and this may tell us
that it is an effective study.
CHAPTER 3

METHODOLY

Materials:

mortar and pestle

500 grams of mango leaves

1 tablespoon of water

mixer

variety of soil(loam soil)

Procedure:

The researcher gather all the main materials as what has stated above. First, the researcher pound a 500grams of
mango leaves through using the mortar and pestle. make sure that it has been totally pound so that the nutrients
will be absorb by the plants. After pounding you may add a tablespoon of water and mix it very well. You may wait
for a minute to mix the nutrients on it. After awhile you may try it to pechay plant which is planted to a loam soil
and observe it for 5-7days and you may see the appearance of a small evidence that it is effective because it
grown.

CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the results and data gathered after the experiment are shown through tables. I used pechay plant
for my experiment.

POT A

Week Height Width

1 2cm 0.9cm
2 4.5cm 2.3cm
3 8cm 4.2cm
4 10.9cm 7.1cm

POT B

Week Height Width

1 2.2cm 1.4cm

2 5.0cm 2.6cm

3 9.2cm 4.7cm
4 11.3cm 7.8cm

POT C
Week Height Width

1 2.1cm 1.2cm

2 4.8cm 2.4cm

3 8.8cm 4.5cm

4 11cm 7.5cm

POT A-WITHOUT A FERTILIZER

POT B-WITH COMMERCIAL FERTILIZER

POT C- WITH MANGO LEAVES FERTILIZER

In this table, there is a big difference in ach pot. As I observe that there's a slight improvement if we use a mango
leaves fertilizer though the commercial one is more applicable. But then, the mango leaves fertilizer is cheaper
than the commercial fertilizer. It is also environmental-friendly compared to others.

CHAPTER 5

Conclusion:

I conclude that my investigatory project which is "Mango leaves as an organic fertilizer" is advisable and the more
you can save because it is cheaper than the other.

Recommendation:

I recommend this to all farmers who can't afford the commercial fertilizer and the more they could save money.
Glossary:

Pestle: a heavy tool with a rounded end, used for crushing and grinding substances such as spices or drugs,
typically in a mortar.

Mortar is a material used in masonry construction to fill the gaps between the bricks and blocks used in
construction. Mortar is a mixture of sand, a binder such as cement or lime, and water and is applied as a paste
which then sets hard.

Carboxylation is a chemical reaction in which a carboxylic acid group is produced by treating a substrate with
carbon dioxide. The opposite reaction is decarboxylation.

In botany, a drupe is an indehiscent fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a single shell of hardened
endocarp with a seed inside. These fruits usually develop from a single carpel, and mostly from flowers with
superior ovaries

The term carotene is used for many related unsaturated hydrocarbon substances having the formula C₄₀Hₓ, which
are synthesized by plants but in general cannot be made by animals. Carotenes are photosynthetic pigments
important for photosynthesis. Carotenes contain no oxygen atoms

Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide (CO2). Usually,
decarboxylation refers to a reaction of carboxylic acids, removing a carbon atom from a carbon chain.

A cardiotonic is a substance that has a favorable effect upon the action of the heart. Drugs that have beneficial
action on the heart are classed as cardiotonics. Cardiotonics may be prescribed when the heart is not pumping
enough blood to supply other organs.

Potash is a potassium-rich salt that is mined from underground deposits formed from evaporated sea beds millions
of years ago. Potassium is an essential element for all plant, animal and human life. The term "potash" refers to a
group of potassium (K) bearing minerals and chemicals.

Digitization, less commonly digitalization, is the process of converting information into a digital format, in which
the information is organized into bits.

Flesh is the soft substance of the body of a living human or other animal. In a human or other animal body, this
consists of muscle and fat; for vertebrates, this especially includes muscle tissue (skeletal muscle), as opposed to
bones and viscera. Animal flesh, as food, is called meat.
