ESS Equations (need to be memorized for the exam)

Topic 2 - Ecosystems and Ecology

NPP = GPP - R
GSP = food eaten - fecal loss
NSP = GSP - R

Lincoln Index (p140)

N = (n1 x n2) / m2
n1 = number of animals first marked and released
n2 = number of animals captured in the second sample
m2 = number of animals marked in the second sample
N = Lincoln Index, or total population

Simpson's Diversity Index (p141)

Topic 8 - Human Population Dynamics

Total Fertility rate: births per 1000 women of childbearing age
Rate above 2.0 = increase, below 2.0 = decrease

Crude Birth Rate (CBR): births per 1000 in a population per year.
Births/Total Population x 1000
Crude Death Rate (CDR): deaths per 1000 in a population per year.
Deaths/Total Population x 1000
Natural Increase Rate (NIR): rate of human growth as a percent change per year.
NIR = (CBR - CDR)/10
Doubling Time (DT): Time it takes for a population to double.
DT = 70/NIR
A population with an NIR of 1% will double every 70 years
