We’ve been talking about objectives, instructional strategies (teaching/learning), and the assessments that
measure student performance. You can think of the instructional strategy as the vehicle that you use to
help students achieve the objectives. The assessment helps the teacher and the learner know when
objectives have been achieved. This week, we’re exploring different types of alternative assessments.
Most of the alternative assessments can also be considered performance-based – assessing what students
create.
For this exercise, you’ll look at the objectives below and think about which of the activities and
alternative assessment techniques listed would work best.
Then, tick your choices and explain why you think they would be the best.
For some of these settings, you may choose more than one activity or assessment you find
appropriate.
You can talk about what would work best in your own setting, as well. Make sure you describe the degree
for the objective.
Example
Having read about and discussed a controversial topic in class, intermediate-level students will convince
their classmates that their point of view about the controversial topic is correct.
Tick your choice from the following activities:
o debate,
o essay,
o persuasive speech,
o role-play
Underline your choice from the following assessment tools:
o checklist,
o peer evaluation,
o rubric
Why you think it’s a good choice:
A debate lets more students be involved at the same time, with multiple students on a
team. The role-play also has multiple students involved. A persuasive speech will be an
individual effort. A rubric will give learners a clear idea of expectations. Peer
evaluation is a possibility, but best in conjunction with a rubric. An essay is not as
effective for convincing others in a class.
The elements that you will assess:
use of persuasive language; use of appropriate body language; appropriate vocabulary
and grammar choice (based on what has been covered)
Degree:

way.

improve the economy), advanced-level students will work with a group to discuss a solution to the
problem.

speaking practice.it can help to consider student learning and how student can improve.
