OGL 482 Pro-Seminar II

Module 6 Assignment:
Career Plan
Section 1:

1) What is your BHAG?

In ten years I will be a leader of a national organization committed to providing classroom

resources and professional development for K-12 Career and Technical Education (CTE)

educators improving teacher retention and student achievement in CTE while maintaining my

personal career and life balance.

2) Why is this your BHAG?

Currently I work in the field of Career and Technical Education for an organization who has

effectively created a model to provide curriculum resources within 9-12 CTE in Arizona. It is

called the Arizona CTE Curriculum Consortium. It is my belief that this model can be effective

in K-8 and beyond Arizona. Work and life balance is extremely important for me both mentally

and spiritually if I am to remain an effective and productive leader.

3) How does your BHAG align with your vision statement from Module 4?

My Vision statement is “As I live my life I will model what I expect to have in return, I will help

others with all the courage, strength, and knowledge that I have, and be happy and content with

all that I have.” My BHAG aligns with my vision by putting into action how I will continue to

help others. Being a leader of an organization that can reach a broad audience to provide relevant

resources to help others succeed using my courage, strength, and knowledge supports my

BHAG. The second part of my BHAG includes maintaining personal and career balance. This

also aligns with my vision by being happy and content with what I have. Developing a work-life
balance requires a mental state to have gratitude for all that you have, especially if you consider

the problems of the world around you. Practicing this habit will help bring balance that I seek in

both my vision and my BHAG.

4) How does your BHAG align with your mission statement from Module 4?

My Mission Statement:

“I will use my friendliness, enthusiasm and determination to love, create, and

challenge myself.

So that I can graduate from college, spend quality time with family, and be

physically and mentally healthy.

To achieve balance in both my personal and professional life.”

My mission statement aligns with my BHAG through the connection of challenging myself and

creating work-life balance. My BHAG is a big goal and it is one that requires me to push my

leadership limits. It excites me about future possibilities and motivates me to succeed. At the

same time I seek balance. Creating a highly skilled and productive will help me and the

organization succeed with the BHAG.

5) List your top five (5) obstacles in order from number 5 being least difficult and
number 1 being most difficult you need to overcome in order to obtain your BHAG
and explain the relevance of each one.

Obstacle # 1: Funding.

As with most things in education, CTE is also affected by the lack of funding. Although our

organization has managed to do great things with a small budget, in order to reach a broad

audience with multi-level resources we will need a larger budget to maintain staff necessary to

achieve this BHAG.

2
Obstacle # 2: Creating a sense of urgency to support the BHAG.

Our stakeholders understand the sense of urgency at the 9-12 grade level of CTE and needing

these resources. However there is hesitancy on expanding to lower grade levels even with the

desire to help, they want to be sure 9-12 programs remain fully supported and resources are not

shifted to the other needs without fully assessing the situation. This could delay the BHAG.

Obstacle # 3: Creating buy in from educators.

With the many things required of K-12 educators today, the last thing I want to do is create

another requirement for them to achieve in their responsibilities as teachers. Creating resources

that make delivering the message of career literacy and career exploration easier for them to do is

part of the BHAG. This will require educators understanding the vision and what their role is in

achieving it.

Obstacle # 4: Empowering K-12 educators to support BHAG.

The need to communicate the availability and the relevance to educators is a continuous effort. It

will require professional development and communicating achievements and best practices along

the way. With educators support in using the resources my BHAG will fail so this is an obstacle I

will strive to overcome.

Obstacle # 5: Keeping up with the changes in the industry.

Keeping current with changing industries is a constant obstacle at all grade levels. Changes

happen fast in industry and our staff must be aware and pro-active when changes occur to ensure

the relevance of our resources.

3
Section 2: Career Vision

1) Analyze the type of career you want to have, in terms of an organizational career or
a protean career, make sure it is clear you understand the concepts as outlined in
the textbook. Why?

I am not sure if or how this is possible, however I believe I would prefer to have an

organizational career while borrowing some of the advantages of a protean career. I like the

organizational structure and I believe I am more productive with this level. The protean

advantages I like is the flexibility with schedule and the autonomy to make some decisions at my

level. Working in an environment with this modified style will help me gain the work-life

balance of my vision, mission, theme, and BHAG indicated.

2) Analyze your career with an explanation as one that moves you up the organization
or one you develop seeking alternative career paths. If you see yourself taking an
alternative career path, which one(s) sound the most likely? Why?

If I were to achieve my BHAG I foresee moving up within the organization. Structurally with my

BHAG it will require the organization to make some changes to support being in multiple states.

3) Discuss and explain if you see yourself working an alternative or flexible work
schedule/arrangement? If so, which ones and why?

I attribute working a flexible work schedule to a protean style career, however I am more prone

to the organizational style career I could see myself working in an organization where this could

be an option. Some flexibility would be alternative hours like 4 -10-hour days versus 5 - 8-hour

days. Also the flexibility to work from home would have the added benefit of saving personal

time and money. I believe it would help create more of a work-life balance and help me to be

more productive.

4) Research and post current, or past, job postings from your local area, across the
country, or from around the world which illustrate how you might reach your
BHAG. Be sure to provide the Job Title, a small description and why it supports
your BHAG when you provide the URL. Websites such as CareerBuilder, Monster,
or Indeed might be a good place to begin. Also, career-specific websites such as

Section 3: Long-Term Strategy

1) Critically think about and then list the interim steps or milestones you have laid out
for yourself that will aid you in reaching your BHAG (you should have at least 10 to
earn a rating of excellent and be referenced by time)

1. Assess the need for online CTE curriculum resources in states outside Arizona.
2. Identify and list of any organizations who may already be creating or providing similar
resources and their success in states outside Arizona.
3. Research alternative funding opportunities and apply to receive funds.
4. Create a proposal to generate support of Arizona stakeholders to venture beyond Arizona
CTE.
5. Design professional development for CTE outside Arizona to generate a clear vision of
expectations for project.
6. Market the resources to schools and districts outside of Arizona.
7. Develop and maintain resources to support industry, Arizona CTE, and CTE across the
United States.
8. Assess structure and project details to mitigate any risks and make appropriate changes as
necessary to achieve goals.
9. Measure and communicate teacher and student achievement with using our resources.
10. Develop habits to maintain work-life balance.

2) In addition to career-related roles, consider your other life roles in relation to your
career goals. Revisit your responses to the Identities Exercise that you completed in
Module 1 of the course. Based on your long-term strategy, what are the 3 most
precious things you are willing to sacrifice, besides time, to achieve your BHAG?
Why?

Identity Sacrifice #1: Hobby of running.

For the past two years while completing my degree I have sacrificed this identity in order

to create time to complete my studies. Running does help me create a mental and physical

balance but in order to achieve my BHAG more time is needed and I will need to continue to

find other ways to stay mentally and physically healthy to add time to my BHAG.

Identity Sacrifice # 2: Being a parent.

Although it would seem counter productive sacrifice being a parent, in reality my

8
daughters are now a senior in college and a senior in high school. Therefore I am almost an

empty nester and do not have to spend as much time on the daily responsibilities of being a

parent. I can interact with them with less supervision and more support.

Identity Sacrifice # 3: Duties within professional association ACTEAZ.

Currently I serve as a Board member and Fellow on my professional association

ACTEAZ. Sacrificing this role will allow me more time to focus on my BHAG. Later I can

return to the Association if their is an opening within their board and a need for my continuation.

9
Section 4: The one to two year plan.
1) What is your #1 Goal? (at least one of the following must be related to your BHAG)

Assess the need for CTE online resources outside Arizona and identify organizations who are

currently servicing this need.

a. Our team will research and determine a needs assessment for online CTE
resources outside of Arizona. We will identify organizations that may already be
providing these resources in these areas and determine their effectiveness. This
will provide accurate information for which states may have the greatest need so
our organization can make informative decisions on moving forward with the
project.

b. Progress and completion will be measured by researching and providing detailed

information on needs assessment and competitor information for each state within
the United States.

c. Each state provides information on their CTE programs regarding enrollment and
surveys can be sent to each program director to assess needs..

d. The relevancy of this goal is determine highest needs for each state and whether
our program could effectively be adopted.

e. I will complete this step by researching five states each month until on or before
December 2020.

10
2) What is your #2 Goal? (at least one of these must be related to your BHAG)

Develop habits to create a work-life balance.

a. Determine healthy habits such as exercising and spending quality time with
family to be mentally and spiritually balanced between work and life.

b. Progress will be determined by monitoring weight loss and blood pressure levels
over the next six months.

c. This goal is has applicable time and attainable measures to be successful.

d. To gain an overall sense of happiness and maintain productivity at work this goal
is relevant.

e. I will lose ten pounds and do one family activity a week to maintain work-life
balance for the next six months.
