1. What is the name of the article?

- In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy detects pigmentary changes in melasma at a cellular level reso-
lution
2. What is the name of its authors?
- Hee Young Kang Philipe Bahadoran Itaru Suzuki Didier Zugaj Abdallah Khemis Thierry Passeron
Philipe Andres Jean Paul Ortonne
3. In which magazine, volume, volume and pages was it published?
- Experimental Dermatology 19 e228-233 Jonh Wiley & Sons 2010
4. In what year?
2010
5. What is the central theme of the article?
if confocal reflectance microscopy detects pigmentary changes in melasma better than old methods
6. What do you think is the experimental question of the article?
- Is microscopic confocal reflectance the best diagnostic method of melasma?
7. What is the main hypothesis that the authors make regarding the experimental question?
- The confocal reflectance microscopy technique is the best diagnostic method of melasma for being a
non-invasive technique and for its high resolution at the cellular level
8. What are the main objectives of the authors with this article?
- Compare the diagnostic efficacy of CMR with histological biopsy
9. What methodology did the authors use to answer the experimental question?
- They compared the two diagnostic options in healthy patients and in patients with melasma and their
effectiveness in detecting the characteristics of melasma lesions.
10. Did the authors use some kind of mathematical analysis for the data they obtained? If yes,
which one?
- Odd Ratio and valué of p significante
11. What do the results obtained indicate regarding the experimental question?
RMC was only better than histological biopsy to detect increased pigmentation and elastosis
12. Do the results conform to the methodology described by the authors?
- Not because despite its high resolution and that allows melasma to be classified, it requires association
with other histological tests for maximum utilization.
13. Do you think that the methodology used and the results obtained correspond to the objectives
set by the authors?
- The methodology was correct but the results were not as expected.
14. With these results, is the authors hypothesis validated or denied?
Denied because the results do not favor the RMC being the best diagnostic method despite not being inva-
sive.
15. Did the authors find methodological problems or in the approach of the original experimental
question?
No.
16. Do the authors propose other points of view or methodologies to address their experimental
question in the future?
How MRI could help melasma classification
17. What do the authors conclude?
- This study successfully evidenced characteristic RCM patterns in melasma with correlation to histologi-
cal findings. Compared to Wood lamp and biopsies, RCM offers the unique combination of a non-inva-
sive analysis of multiple different areas with a resolution close to the cellular level. Therefore, RCM
provides an innovative way to classify melasma by pigment changes.
18. Bibliography
The amount of melanin was measured by calculating the pigmented area per epidermis area or pigmented
area per dermis area within 100-lm distance from the DEJ. The elastic fibres were quantified using colour
deconvolution algorithm
