Subtask: Pumpkin Art - Junior and Timeline: 5-7 minute introduction, 10-15
Senior Kindergarten minute activity
Expectations Addressed:
4.4, 8.4: demonstrate control of small muscles while working in a variety of learning areas, and
using a variety of materials or equipment
4.4, 8.5: demonstrate spatial awareness by doing activities that require the use of small
muscles
Beginning/Engagement: Sit down at the carpet, and have everyone settled before starting
the lesson.
Once everyone has settled, explain to the students that we will
be doing an art project involving pumpkins. Ask the students
what colour a pumpkin is. Have the students raise their hands,
and pick an SK to answer the question.
Now demonstrate the lesson. We will be using 2 different colours
of tissue paper, which is very thin, coloured paper, and an outline
of a pumpkin. The tissue paper will already be pre-ripped for
them. Explain to the students that we are going to scrunch them
up into balls, then using a small dot of glue, we will be gluing
them on the paper inside the lines, so we can make a pumpkin.
Demonstrate how to crumple tissue paper. Roll it up into a loose
ball so that it isn’t too small, glue one side of it with a small dot,
and then place it on the paper inside the lines of the pumpkin.
Demonstrate this for some (3-4 for orange + green).
Ask the students if we use a lot of glue, have them raise their
hand to tell you the answer. Pick an SK to answer. Ask if we
should be using a small dot of glue to stick the tissue paper on.
Have them raise their hand and tell you the answer. Pick an SK to
answer.
Middle: Have 4-6 students at the art table with you. Have them write their
name on the top of the page of the outline of the pumpkin. Once
the students have done so, demonstrate crumpling the paper
one more time, to remind the students what to do. Then have
them start their project.
Remind the students to only use a small dot when gluing, and that
the orange is for the pumpkin, and the green is for the stem.
Wrap-Up: Once students are done, have them show you what they’ve
accomplished. Let the students know that they did a good job in
staying inside the lines, gluing with small dots, and finishing the
picture with the colours in the correct spot.
Have them put their artwork on the drying rack.
