The Medawar Lecture 1998: Is science dangerous?

Title of the Article

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. A valid reason why the government is limiting the exploration of scientists
ii. The ethical and moral value of eugenics
iii. The duties and social responsibilities of scientists

2. Insights (What new insights or learning did you gain in the article?)

i. Before reading the article, I thought that science and technology is directly
associated to each other. I believed science is what paved the way for
technology to rise and prosper. However, after carefully reading the article, I
now realized that science and technology is not directly associated to each
other and that they are not the same. Science is the pure knowledge the world
and the universe have to offer. On the other hand, technology is the method
on how these knowledges will be used in a good or in a bad way.

ii. Before reading the article, I thought that scientists are free to discover what
they want and are the ones in charge in the scientific advancements of the
world. I thought they were the ones dedicated to discover all new things in
order to help humanity. However, after carefully reading the article, I now
realized that scientists are just under the control of the government and the
public. They are bounded to the will of the people and the power of the
government making their discovery and exploration limited.

iii. Before reading the article, I thought that science is truly dangerous when it falls
unto the wrong hands. The power of knowledge is the most powerful thing the
world has to offer. However, after carefully reading the article, I now thought
that the idea that knowledge is dangerous is just at first. When something has
been discovered and its bad effects are explicitly stated, it will be turned down
immediately and its further analyzation will be stopped. This kind of thinking is
what limits humanity to discover more things because the fear of discovery and
the fear of the bad consequences it has to offer is greater than the possible
benefit of this additional knowledge.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. What is the social responsibility of scientists? If there is, how can this affect
their discovering of the unknown?
ii. If a new discovery poses great danger, can the scientists stop its further
exploration and analyzation for the betterment of the people? Or will it just
stop if the government said so?
iii. Society plays a huge role in the government and the government is what
orders the scientists what to do. Plus, they funded the scientists of their work
The question is, if a discovery is made and the people does not agree with
that because it is unethical to the majority but it is a great way to improve
the quality of life of the people and improve the country overall, will it still
be turned down by the government?
