I wish to express my sincere thanks to Mr. Ruben S. Viloria for providing me the basic electronic

information and materials for the technology used in the study.

I will also take this opportunity to record my sincere thanks to my classmates who gave their

precious time and helped me in having my data complete.

Introduction

Background of the Study:

If you find yourself on the go most of the time and in need of a mobile recharge, then a backup

battery is a must. External batteries or power banks have become a necessity (Yang, 2013). In

cooperation with electrician, Mr. Ruben Viloria, La Pace Leggera is designed to backup phone’s battery

and would let one study on a smart phone for a couple of hours. In addition, the technology is also

equipped with LED light bulb that could help one to study or do homework in the dark whenever there

are power interruptions.

The lead acid battery uses the constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charge method. A

regulated current raises the terminal voltage until the upper charge voltage limit is reached at which

point the current drops due to saturation. The charge time is 12-16 hours and up to 36-48 hours for

large stationary batteries (Buchmann, 2017). Basically, LEDs are just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an

electrical circuit, unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they don’t have a filament that will burn out, and

they don’t get especially hot (Harris and Fenlon, 2017). The La Pace Leggera Technology is a Lead acid

battery, composed of 12 volts and having an output of 3 ampere per hour so if the phone has a 1520

milliampere per hour (mAh) and composed of 5 volts, one could charge and study on smart phone for at

least 3-4 hours. The light which is included on the technology is a Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulb which

doesn’t heat up fast and it is also composed of 0.07 Ampere hour (Ah) consisting of 12 volts so it could

last for at least 42.85 hours that could let one study in the dark for more than a day.

The technology could also be one’s companion by its useful add-on gadgets such as cable

connectors for smart phone and LED bulbs where one could go anywhere without hesitation because of

lack of power or no lights at where they would like to go. Furthermore, it would let one to transcend or

go beyond the limit in going anywhere, anytime in case they need a portable power supply and light.

According to Justin Fox(2017), LEDs use 85 percent less electricity than incandescent

bulbs. Going on an estimate of 1 billion LEDs and CFLs now in U.S. homes, operating three hours per day,

an energy savings so far of 50 billion kilowatt-hours per year, or 160 kilowatt-hours per capita, which

1
was about equal to the decline in residential consumption. The total decline in the chart above comes to

1,161 kilowatt-hours per capita, which still leaves a lot of electricity savings to explain away -- but LEDs

and CFLs are surely cutting electricity use in commercial and industrial settings, too (Fox, 2017). Light

Emitting Diodes or LEDs are also energy saving that could also be poweredby a 12 volts battery that will

make one at ease on a job and at the same time, saving energy consumptions.

MANILA, Philippines – A month ago,Earnest MangulabnanZabalafinally took the plunge. After

years of hemming and hawingEarnest and the home owner finally agreed to have heretofore bare roof

be adorned with 12 solar panels. Each can generate 250 watts per hour from the rays of the sun for a

combined total of 3 kw per hour. Every day, one could get at least 4 hours of sunshine, effectively

harvesting 12 kw each day. What does this mean? It means during the day, household appliances are

directly powered by electricity generated by these solar panels. It means once idle roof becomes a quiet

mini power plant for half the day while the sun is out. It let one get off the Meralco grid for a few hours

each day. Which of course, translates to savings when monthly electric bill arrives and on the average,

Earnest is looking at a 40% "discounted" rate on bill(Zabala, 2017). The La Pace Leggera Technology is a

technology powered by a solar panel which means it could conserve energy and helps the nature by

using solar panels rather than coal-fired powerplants.

La Pace Leggera is an Italian word for light peace, a tagline from the band of Bamboo that the

researcher usually listen to, and coincidentally the researcher was listening to that band and an idea was

produced, to create a technology that would bring an ease of living. In addition, light peace or La Pace

Leggera was chosen as the title for the technology since it provides light.

The technology is compact yet powerful that could power light bulbs and smart phones that

would let one study and entertain whenever there are power interruptions. The technology is harmless

because the bulbs used doesn’t heat up and wouldn’t start a fire. Lastly the technology is multipurpose

like one could power speakers and amplifier. Furthermore, LED bulbs are reused from busted LED bulbs

so no LED bulbs are wasted.

2
Theoretical Framework (Paradigm):

Power banks come in different kinds of mAh or mill ampere hours. The higher the mAh, the

longer talk, internet or standby time it can give your device. For example, the iPhone’s built-in battery is

1,400 mAh. If you buy a power bank with the same mAh, then it effect you’re doubling your phone’s

battery life since your power bank is capable of charging your device back to 100 percent (Yang, 2013).

The amount of solar power added worldwide soared by some 50% last year because of a sun

rush in the US and China, new figures show.New solar photovoltaic capacity installed in 2016 reached

more than 76 gigawatts, a dramatic increase on the 50GW installed the year before. China and the US

led the surge, with both countries almost doubling the amount of solar they added in 2015, according to

data compiled by Europe’s solar power trade body. there is now 305GW of solar power capacity, up

from around 50GW in 2010 and virtually nothing at the turn of the millennium (Vaughan, 2017).

SANTO TOMAS, Batangas — President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday inaugurated the first

Filipino-owned solar panel factory that would enable Filipino homes to cut their electricity bills by 30

percent.Solar Philippines president Leandro Leviste said the solar factory in Santo Tomas, Batangas

province, would produce 2.5 million panels a year, establishing the Philippines as a player in the global

renewable energy revolution (Tubeza, 2017).

The La Pace Leggera technology allow ones to use a technology which is eco friendly and it

would let one to charge a phone on any area since the technology is portable too. The technology would

bring an ease of living for some areas wherein power is not available.

Methodology

Design of the Study:

The study wants to observe the extent of the benefits of La Pace Leggera technology to the

STEM students of Baguio Central University in September 2017. The study used a descriptive method

because it will give a concrete description wherein the study could be easily understood.

The descriptive-survey research design was ideal to use in the study because the study would

like to know the extent of the observation. Moreover, it will let the study more understandable wherein

one could clearly find new truth.

Locale and Population of the Study:

The researcher used cluster sampling using grade 12 STEM 12 students of Baguio Central

University only. The researcher picked a certain group of academic track students and distributed the

questionnaire to the grade 12 students of STEM-A and STEM-B wherein 30 students of STEM-B will be

observing the topic and 20 students for STEM-A. Hence, there were 50 students who observed the

technology.

Results and discussions

This chapter contains the tabular presentation of the data gathered as well as their observation

and interpretation to the technology presented to them.

Advantages of La Pace Leggera Technology to the students of Baguio Central University

Table 1 shows the extent of observation on the advantages of La Pace Leggera technology to the

students of Baguio Central University. The computed overall average weighted mean of 2.38 where it

refers to a descriptive equivalent of ‘always observed’ states that the STEM 12 students observed the

advantages of the La Pace Leggera technology.

Emergency light whenever there are power interruptions was greatly observed by the students

from STEM 12 where it has the highest weighted mean of 2.64 with a descriptive equivalent of ‘always

observed’. According to the respondents, the technology is helpful to enhance our vision whenever

there are power interruptions because the lights are also bright as the light from power corporations.

Light-emitting diodes, commonly called LEDs, are real unsung heroes in the electronics world and the

lifespan of a LED surpasses the short life of an incandescent bulb by thousands of hours (Harris and

Fenlon, 2017). The La Pace Leggera technology’s bulb was made up of LED which is fitted for being

emergency light.

High speed charging of phones was considered as the lowest weighted mean which is 2.14 that

has a descriptive equivalent of ‘sometimes observed’. According to the respondents, Charging of phones

are not that fast enough. Although the lights are good and could be used whenever there are power

interruptions, phones could also be charged and the technology could fill up the phone to its best but

the charging time is in its average time which is not fast or slow. In conventional power bank, it may take

over 6 hours to be fully charged, but our power bank only takes 15 to 30 minutes and the sense behind

these concerns would be overheating issue due to large charging power and high potential of explosion

(Yang, 2016). It only states that some fast charging devices may explode or overheat but the La Pace

9
Leggera technology is not a fast charging or slow charging technology.

It shows that the technology’s advantage was it could be an emergency light whenever there are

power interruptions. Moreover, it’s not fast in charging phones but it could totally charge your phone

and it is not also slow in charging smart phones

Disadvantages of La Pace Leggera Technology to the students of Baguio Central University

Table 2 shows the extent of observation on the disadvantages of La Pace Leggera technology to

the students of Baguio Central University. The computed overall average weighted mean of 2.09 where

it refers to a descriptive equivalent of ‘sometimes observed’ states that the STEM 12 students observed

some of the disadvantages of the La Pace Leggera technology.

The technology is bulky which was the most observed as the disadvantage of the technology

which has a weighted mean of 2.24 with a descriptive equivalent of ‘sometimes observed’. The

respondents stated that the technology is too bulky. In addition, the technology is observed that it could

be portable and compact yet it’s quite a bit big. A small disadvantage of power bank is that it is a bit

bulky. It is thick and has weight. If you are to wear it, it feels a little awkward because it adds to the

burden of your handbag (Cai, 2016).

The power of the technology is draining fast. It doesn’t charge your smart phone completely

wasn’t that noticeable and with a lowest weighted mean which is 1.96 with a descriptive equivalent of

‘sometimes observed’. According to the respondents, the power is not draining fast and perhaps it could

complete the charge of your phones yet it is sometimes observed that it is not fast or slow in draining its

power and it does charge your phone. Any power bank can lose charge and with it, capacity. Though it

might be hard to understand, let us illustrate. You see, in every power bank are batteries and batteries

are made of chemicals. The more time you charge your power bank, the more changes takes place with

the chemical inside the battery (Leo, 2015).

It means that the La Pace Leggera technology was a little bit bulky yet the technology is not

draining fast and could totally charge smart phone.

Qualities of La Pace Leggera Technology to the students of Baguio Central University

Table 3 shows the extent of observation on the qualities of La Pace Leggera technology to the

students of Baguio Central University. The computed overall average weighted mean of 2.31 where it

refers to a descriptive equivalent of ‘sometimes observed’ states that the STEM 12 students observed

the qualities of the La Pace Leggera technology.

Power from the technology can be useful anywhere is considered as the most observed quality

which has an average weighted mean of 2.42 and has a descriptive equivalent of ‘always observed’.

According to the respondents, the technology is compact and could be use anywhere, it could let them

use their phone longer and use its light anywhere. You can bring it in the office, or while on vacation. It

does not need sockets so you can charge your phone even when you are in travel or vacation in the

woods (Cai, 2016)

Light weight is the lowest quality of the technology that has an average weighted mean of 2.10

and has a descriptive equivalent of ‘sometimes observed’. According to the respondents, it only means

that the technology is heavy which could contribute to the study’s improvement. Any heavy or bulky

power bank, It is tough for you to use your phone while charging with it (Saini, 2016).

It states that the La Pace Leggera technology has the qualities of being compact and can be

useful anywhere yet has its lowest quality which is not light weight.
