UNDERSTANDING Students will analyse literary texts from IDENTITIES contemporary and historical periods, interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. This course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 11 university or college preparation course. Guiding Course Questions: 1. How do texts help us evaluate the struggles individuals experience both internally and externally? 2. To what extent do texts help us understand the importance of embracing and accepting all aspects of our identity? 3. To what extent do texts help us understand how an individual’s past shapes and impacts their future? Units of Study: Media Texts A consideration of film and music videos with a focus on students’ formation of identity and presentation of media conventions Assessments include a music video storyboard Short Fiction and Non-fiction Texts Reading of various short fiction and non-fiction texts that reflect the course theme Assessments include a unit test Novel Study A dynamic study of a chosen text involving close readings, research, and book club discussions Assessments include an inquiry opinion essay, weekly group discussions, and a critical journal Drama Examination of the play The Shape of a Girl Assessments include a monologue and a textual analysis Culminating Unit An independent reading of a personally selected novel Assessments include checkpoints, a book trailer to promote the novel, and an essay ** There may be some changes to the summative assignments at the beginning of the course based on the needs of the class. **
