Cause/Effect Essay
Topic: - The causes of Street Crime
The modern world, though is getting more and more advance, at the same time the rate of crimes
is also increasing rapidly. Crimes are of various forms like white collar crimes or street crimes.
Street crimes in particular are of different types such as snatching, pickpocketing, vandalism, etc.
Some of the causes of street crimes are Illiteracy, unemployment, and poverty.
One of the main reason or cause of the growing crime is illiteracy. Education is
fundamental, a building block or foundation for a person and his future. Lack of it thereof causes
people to commit such crimes as these people aren’t guided. They do not know the difference
between something that is moral or immoral. Hence, they perform such crimes because it is all
that they have known as they can’t be employed anywhere and doing such acts to them is
deemed as the easy way to earn bread and living. They do not think of the impact their crimes
have on the society or themselves.
Secondly, people commit street crime because of unemployment. The economic condition
of some countries is extremely poor that there aren’t many job opportunities for the masses. The
job choices are also very limited which require a lot of high qualifications and experience.
Moreover, there are more people who need jobs that the jobs available. This is why many people
are unemployed. They have no resources or income. This diverts them towards committing street
crimes or just crimes, in general. They snatch, steal, rob or even exchange drugs for money.
People turn towards these activities as they have no other option and this is the best available
one. They cannot think of any alternates means to gain money. Once they adopt this method,
they find it to be very convenient.
Poverty is also a cause of indulging in performing street crimes. Poor people or those with
low income level are more inclined towards these activities. Many people who are poor think
that the only way to improve their conditions is through criminal activities or otherwise their
conditions will never improve. But not everyone is like this, some just suffer in poverty because
their means of income isn’t sufficient enough to fulfil the basic necessities of life. So, such
people turn towards street crimes in order to earn more to support their basic income with hopes
of making their lives and standards of living better.
Street crimes have impacted the society in a negative way by ruining the trust on humanity.
People do not feel safe walking alone outside. Certain measures should be taken to keep criminal
activities of the streets like snatching of cell phone and handbags, pickpocketing in the markets
etc. One way of eliminating this is to remove the causes of Street crimes that is illiteracy,
unemployment, poverty, etc. and keep a regulatory check and balance in order to diminish such
cruel acts.
