The domestication of potatoes (Solanum spp.) probably started about 10 000
years ago around Lake Titicaca in modern day Peru and Bolivia, when inhabitants
of the region began selecting edible forms of wild potato species. The illustration
shows the variation in the original wild species that eventually gave rise to the
potato as we know it today.

Because of the importance of the potato, the United
Nations named 2008 as the International Year of the
Potato (IYP). This major event seeks to focus world
attention on the role that the potato can play in
providing food security and eradicating poverty in
support of achieving internationally agreed
development goals, including the Millennium
Development Goals.
