COEP Satellite Team Induction Questionnaire

(For FY and SY both)

August 2019
Structure Subsystem

General Instruction:

1. The logical justification of answers is expected.

2. Answers should be submitted through https://forms.gle/9e2ZfNnmtQoxjnyU6 or in

the form of hard copy in the Fablab, Production Department, between 6 pm and 9 pm.
Make only one pdf for all the answers you give using the cam-scanner app.

3. The deadline for submission is Wednesday 04/09/2019 before 11:59 p.m.

4. Attempt as many questions as you can. It is not compulsory to attempt all the
questions.

5. Most of the questions are open-ended (no accurate answer) and they will be judged
on the efforts put in answering them and the creativity and practicality of the solution.

6. Assume suitable data wherever necessary and state your assumptions in the
beginning.

7. Write down your thought process for the answer. You will be judged on the basis of
your thinking and approach.

8. You may use any source of information, but provide a reference at the end of the
solution. Please make sure that this source is not “the answer sheet of another
candidate”. No copy-paste, please. It is very easy to catch and leads to both the
people being eliminated.

9. Preferred branches are Mechanical, Metallurgy and Materials Science, Civil.

10. For any kind of queries, feel free to contact Chaitra Shet(9960616555), Juber
Shaikh (9834988155).
First-Year Questions:

1. Gravity sometimes makes things fall, while sometimes it makes things revolve around
one another. What is the deciding factor for this? Two satellites of the same mass (m) are
revolving with different time periods collide and form a junk of 2m, what will happen after a
collision.

2. A rope rests on two platforms that are both inclined at A. The rope has uniform mass
density, and the coefficient of friction between it and the platform is 1. The system has
left-right symmetry. What is the largest possible fraction ß of the rope that does not touch
the platform? What angle does A allow this maximum fraction?

3. There are two simple pendulums of fundamental frequency 10Hz and 15Hz. What will be
the effect on them if both pendulums are subjected to sound wave having equation
y=20Sine(2*pi *45*t)?

4. What do you mean by stiffness? Does a straight steel wire have stiffness? A steel wire of
diameter 1 mm and length 2 m is at a temperature of 20 degrees celsius. What would be
the change in its stiffness if its temperature changes to 60 degrees celsius?

5. A ring of radius r=25 made of the lead wire is rotated about a stationary vertical axis
passing through its center and perpendicular to the plane of the ring what is the number of
rps at which the ring ruptures consider all necessary standard data
6. Draw the possible number of isometric views of the following orthographic view:

7. A cannon and a supply of cannonballs are inside a sealed railroad car as shown. The
cannon fires to the right, the car recoils to the left. The cannonballs remain in the car after
hitting the far wall. Show that no matter how the balls are fired the railroad car cannot travel
more than its own length, assuming it starts from rest.

8. Consider a straight nichrome wire of diameter 10 mm and 1 m long in deep space coated
with a very thin layer of white paint. If 3A current flows through it and has an electrical
resistance of 2 Ohm then find out the temperature of wire after the steady-state is achieved.
Also, explain the whole phenomenon from a time when the current starts flowing to the time
when the steady-state is achieved.
9. . Given a rod made of two parts A and B of different materials with densities da and db.
Consider liquid of density dc. Given that dc>db>da. What angle will the rod make with the
vertical when put in the liquid? Why?

10. What is the approximate value of the torque needed to sharpen a wooden pencil?
Justify with proper reasoning. Use the material properties for wood.

Second Year Questions:

1. Find the temperatures at interfaces of a given composite wall made up of steel

(thickness = 15mm, area = 20 sq m), brass (thickness = 20mm, area = 15 sq.m) and lead
(thickness = 10mm, area = 20 sq.m) whose cross section is shown in figure. Neglect
Radiation and Convection.
2. There are three slabs placed one over other of masses 5,3 and 2 Kg. A 10N and 20 N
force are applied on the 5 Kg and 3Kg block coefficient of friction between the block and
ground is 0.1 between 5kg and 3 kg blocks is 0.2 and between 3 kg and 2 Kg blocks is
0.3. Find the accelerations of the slabs.

3. Construct a mechanism such that rotation in the X-Y plane in one direction could produce
vertical oscillatory motion in the Z direction.

4. In a factory, a line shaft fails and then a junior engineer proposed to temporarily use an
already available bar of square cross-section (and same length) in place of the round shaft
based on the fact that the polar moments of inertia of both cross sections were found to be
the same. Comment on the decision of the junior engineer (Neglect issues related to the
mounting of components on the shaft). Also, what could have been the criteria to select a
square shaft to replace a round one for the same length without affecting the safety.

5. A cantilever beam of cross-section 10 mm * 1 mm as shown in figure No. is subjected to

a force of 30 N at the free end. Recommend material for the beam which can provide a
minimum factor of safety value 2. Justify your answer.

.
6. Draw the possible number of isometric views of the following.
7. What are different methods to manufacture the following component

8. What is the natural frequency of the following system

9. Refrigerating systems need insulation to prevent heat transfer from the atmosphere to
the inside. A scientist develops a new type of insulator which is transparent and strong with
the same thermal conductivity as the existing one and proposes to replace the existing
insulation with the new one. Comment on his idea? (consider the cost of both the
insulations to be the same).

10. Jogging in the early morning is very good habit however this activity leads to loss of
energy from the body to the surrounding. Generally, a healthy person sweats around 0.1
Milliliter per second under jogging. Find out entropy generation of this activity and also
recommend some good tips for better jogging minimizing entropy generation. Assume the
necessary data.
