Introduction

Background of the Study

As of today, family businesses dominate the business industry in

the Philippines. Knowing the situation of family businesses, people can

create a variation of choices on what they want as their family business.

Family business is a cycle that benefits both the business

and the family. Some family businesses are run by specific family cultures.

Promoting professional management in a family business is unlikely, for

high positions are often reserved for those who are in the family’s circle

rather than those who are competent in the field. Though only few family

businesses survive up to three generations because of confronting

peculiar challenges (Ekanyake & Kurupugge, 2017). Some of these

challenges are: leadership, succession planning, professionalization,

Managing family relationship, and wealth management (Kavediya, S.,

2017). Bias in the work place is obviously undeniable because in

promoting someone to a very important position in which a family member,

and a skilled non-family member is next on the line, most of the time, the

family member would get the promotion even though the other person is

more competent. Having family members taking in high positions is not

necessarily a bad thing, for the older generation can pass on what they

have learned and guide the future generations.

In order to achieve the customer’s satisfaction, organizations

should enhance the service quality of the company (Kolahib, Sofiyabadia,

& Valmohammadic, 2016) so that the business’ customer will not be

disappointed. And with that, the customers will be contented with service

that the business provides. Customers will help the business to be known

if the customers are satisfied, since the customers discovered the quality

of the business.

Prices are adjusted and are most likely varied. In this type of

business, generally, products will be bought from a wide range of

distributors, domestically or internationally. The products will be marketed

in huge facilities such as shopping areas. Retail clothing, grocery stores

and bookstores are good examples of a merchandising business. Many

people use the term "widget" to refer to any merchandise a business

offers for sale when discussing business issues and dynamics (Hanly,

2018).

processing, manual labour, and other manufacturing processes (Zarate,

2016).

Being business minded has different traits that lead to successfully

managing the business. According to the study of McDonald, P. (2014), in

developing a person to become business minded he must have these six

traits; inquisitiveness, persuasiveness, change-management proficiency ,

service orientation, ability to recognize and respond to diverse thinking

styles, and a global mind-set. McDonald’s study claims that when a

person has these traits within him, that person can simply learn everything

about a certain business. A person can easily know what to do in the

business as well as deciding what’s best for the business. They may think

from different sides, the positive and negative impact of a certain situation

in the business in which it can help the business to grow. To measure that,

there are things that must be considered. The factors that helped in the

process of implementation were personality traits which will be the basis if

the person has the capability to be business minded and of course the act

having an entrepreneurial spirit or perseverance.

Methodology

Research Design

This research used descriptive design. The researchers of this

study applied descriptive research design to show the Perception of the

ABM15 students of DLSU-D who has a family-owned business on being

business minded. This research design aims to describe, observe, and

document a situation as it is. To gather information from a certain person

or group, questionnaires, interviews, and observations may be done (Polit

and Hungler 1999). Specifically, it refers to collecting data that describes

events and then tabulates, describes, depicts, and organizes the data

collection (Glass & Hopkins 2001).

The design of this descriptive survey is most suited to this study

because the researchers aim to systematically describe the Perception of

the ABM15 students of DLSU-D who has a family-owned business on

being business minded.

Among the different sub classification of descriptive research

design, descriptive survey was chosen by the researchers. In survey

method research, participant’s response to the questions administered to

interviews and questionnaires. Through these responses, the researchers

get data and describe the answers. In addition, the important thing to

remember is to be able to have a reliable and valid survey by constructing

each question properly and rightly. Additionally, the questions found in the

survey wouldn’t be so complicated that can confuse the participants. (Hale

2018).

Research Procedure

In collecting the data needed for this study, the respondents were

gathered in the JHS room. The researchers explained the given topic to

the respondents to familiarize them on the survey questionnaire that was

given. The researchers also explained the importance of this study and

informed the respondents to carefully read and answer the given

questions honestly. The respondents were given a maximum of 10

minutes to answer the given survey. A total of 13 questionnaires were

distributed and collected right after the respondents finished answering the

survey.
