About the course

•  SYNOPSIS

•  The course is offered to students who have passed


the compulsory four-unit English language courses.
It is designed for students to enhance their
communication skills in a variety of situations.

•  The course requires students to apply what they have


learned in class, and communicate authentic
interaction through a video blog*

At the end of the course, as students, you should be


able to:

•  Demonstrate communication skills by using


appropriate language related to a variety of
situations.

•  Display the ability to interact effectively through


authentic situations.
This course is for:

Procedures

1.  In groups of 5-7, students choose a corporate/private


company based on their field of study/programme. E.g.
UMW, Kinokuniya, Shell, Gleneagles, TV Al-Hijrah,
Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

2.  Groups are to identify the vision and mission of the


selected company and plan/come up with a Corporate
Awareness video that aligns with the company’s values.

3.  Groups are to submit a copy (in hard copy) of the


company’s info to the instructor prior to the evaluation.

4. Groups decide on a Corporate Awareness video that is related to the selected company.
•  In your respective groups, work together to find an issue (including situations, problems,
solutions, etc) that you are passionate about.
•  The issue chosen for the video is related to social, economic or environmental protection and
sustainability.
The issue must consist some of the elements below:
•  Tagline (what?) eg. AEON ‘Go green with us’
•  Slogan (why?) eg: AEON ‘Enhancing your lifestyle’
•  Background (Introduction to issue)
•  Issue (Theme and sub-themes /Awareness)
•  Thoughts (Content/Elaboration)
•  Solutions (Ideas for improvement)
•  Narration (Story)
•  Hope (effective actions/ impact/ ie conclusion)
•  Company logo (eg: AEON logo)
(the issues are not limited to the above, students are encouraged to use their creativity)

4. Groups are to assign roles to group members to delegate work. The suggested roles are as follows
(group members are not only confined to the roles listed below only):

a. Project Manager (leader, delegation)

b. Secretary (notes and letters)

c. Personal Relations Officer (communication)

d. Language Editor (language)

e. Research Manager (research and references)

f. Video Editor (technical)

g. Creative Director (ideas, concepts, and design)

h. Content Writer (script and narration)

•   Group members may take on one or two roles.

5. During the Corporate Role Play, members of the group are
to present their part of the awareness proposal to the
instructor (as a company director) for 25-30 minutes per
group. The Project Manager chairs the meeting and each
member communicates his/her work/findings/ideas and
persuades/convinces the instructor (as a company director) that
his/her ideas can develop/give awareness to the general
public/target audience.
6. This is an individual assessment. This will be conducted in
Week 6 and 7.
7. Your instructor, sits in as an advisor, will interrupt, give
ideas, suggestions and ask questions to any group member
during the evaluation.

Procedures
1.  In the same groups for Corporate Role Play, students create a 3-minute
Corporate Awareness video.

2.  Firstly, in groups, students showcase their videos and present their ideas in
class.

3.  Then, after viewing the video, students conduct an Executive Presentation.
In groups, students choose group members to present and communicate the
content of the video. As this is a group assessment, not all group members
need to present (this is up to the instructor’s discretion). As long as the
presentation is within the time limit indicated (15-20 minutes).

4.  Students present and convince the CEO/instructor (as a company director) that
their video can develop/give awareness to the general public/target audience
and convinces that their Executive Presentation ideas are worth 20% (the
awarded marks for Executive Presentation).

5.  Presentation time for each group (including the whole video showcase) is
between 15-20 minutes.
