Our Filipino Nationalism is the awakening and support towards a political identity associated with modern
Philippines leading to a wide-ranging campaign for political, social, and economic freedom in the
Philippines. Our Nationalism is a devotion of love for one's country. Nationalism means to give more
importance to unity by way of a cultural background, including language and heritage.

I.OPENING OF THE SUEZ CANAL IN 1869

…………………
The opening on November 17, 1869 of the Suez Canal in Egypt, one of the most
important artificial sea-level waterways in the world, paved the way for the
Philippines' direct commercial relations with Spain instead of via Mexico. As travel
time from the Philippines to Spain and vice versa was shortened to 30 days from more

customs, there was an independent leader who governed his subjects in the
manner of a patriarch or tribal chieftain: in Manila, which had a sizable population,
there were two leaders entitled rajahs, one to the north and the other to the south
of the Pasig river. 2
