What is the Purpose of the Speech?

Every speech that you deliver must have a general
purpose and specific purpose. The general purpose of a formal speech may be
categorized into these three basic types:

1. To inform. An informative speech is given when you want your

audience to learn something or gain a better understanding of the things they
already know.
2. To persuade. A persuasive speech is given when you want to
convince the audience to the particular course of action.
3. To entertain. An entertaining speech provides amusement and
enjoyment to the audience.

A general purpose opens to a wide variety of topics. Choosing a

specific topic leads to your specific purpose.

A. Informative Speech
- Giving information is the most universal type of speech.

Two Ways of Providing Information

- An informative speech may be given into two ways. One is
to make a purely factual presentation and the other, to deliver expository
presentation.

Unique Features of an Informative Speech

- An informative speech is organized and delivered quite
differently.

B. Persuasive Speech
- The purpose of a persuasive speech is to influence the listeners
in such way that they will change their mind for the better.

Advocacy
- Has social and moral implications.
Convince
- You can convince the audience to adopt your points of view.
Inspire
- This type of speech relies more on the value of the emotional
experience than the information given.
Call of action
- Must be realistic.

C. Entertaining Speech
- The purpose of an entertaining speech is to provide a
stimulating distraction to a perplexed and tired mind.
