CONCLUSION

Hence we have extracted essential oils from 100 gm of

mustard and hemp seeds.

PRECAUTIONS
 If you accidentally spill essential oils- clean any spillage
with an absorbent material such as kitchen roll.
 If you accidentally get essential oils in your eye- flush
with copious amounts of milk at least 15 minutes and
seek medical medical advice if symptoms persist.
 If you swallow essential oils- rinse mouth with milk and
seek medical attention.
 Handling- do not eat, drink, or smoke when handling.
Respect good personal hygiene
 Always mix with carrier oil before applying to the skin.
never apply to inflamed or broken skin.
 Do not take internally. If pregnant seek medical advice
before using.
OBSERVATIONS
1) MUSTARD SEED
Weight of musterd seeds taken = 100gm
Initial weight of the bottle =10gm(x)
Weight of essential oil + bottle=32gm(y)
Weight of essential oil extracted= (y-x)= 22gm
Percentage of essential oil= (y/100)*100=22%

Colour of the oil= yellow

Odour of the oil = citrus smell

2) CANNABIS OIL (HEMP SEED OIL)
Weight of seed taken= 100gm
Initial weight of the bottle =10gm(x)
Weight of the bottle + essential oil= 22.7gm
Weight of essential oil extracted=(y-x)=12.7gm
Percentage of essential oil=(y/100)*100=0.12%
Colour of the oil = Clear green
Odour of the oil = nutty smell

REQUIREMENTS
Steam generator (copper vessel), round bottom flask
(500ml), conical flask, condenser, glass tubes, iron stand,
sand bath, separatory funnel, tripod stands,
burners, cannabis seeds ,petroleum ether, mustard seeds.

PROCEDURE

 Set the apparatus as shown in the picture of

experimental setup. The apparatus consists of a steam
a glass inlet tube.
 Take about 750ml of water in the steam generator and
start heating to produce steam.
 In the round bottom flask take about 100 gm of
crushed mustard. A vigorous current of steam from
steam generator is passed through the round bottom
flask.
 A part of the steam condenses in the round bottom
flask. As more and more steam is passed, the steam
volatile components of mustard pass through the
condenser along with steam.
 These contents on condensation are collected in the
reciever.
MUSTARD SEED OIL

Botanical Name
Brassica

Common Method of Extraction

Steam Distilled

Mustard oil and mustard essential oils are completely

different types of oil, although they are both derived from
mustard seeds. Both mustard oil and mustard essential oil
are safe to be used as massage oil. In fact, mustard oil is
used extensively in countries such as India without
reported negative reactions or harmful side effects

MUSTARD ESSENTIAL OIL USES

 Treat arthritis
 Soothe aches and pains
 Decrease inflammation from chest conditions such as
bronchitis and pneumonia
 Antibacterial
 Reliefs body pain
CANNABIS SEED OIL(HEMP OIL)

Botanical Name
Cannabis sativa
Colour- Pale yellow
HEMP SEED OIL is a carrier oil( vegetable oil) that is
obtained by cold pressing of the seeds of Cannabis sativa.
Beta-Caryophyllene is also anti-inflammatory, it is a
component of this oil

USES OF CANNABIS OIL

Antimicrobial
Analgesic
Anti-inflamatory
LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender Essential Oil is well known for its sedative

properties and for its ability to help calm stress and
anxiety and to help promote sleep.

If used in excess, however, Lavender Oil can actually act

as a stimulant.
Lavender Essential Oil is a great oil to use for children's
minor cuts and scrapes because it is anti-bacterial,
calming and is considered safe enough to use with
children when diluted adequately.

 Acne
 Allergies
 Anxiety
 Asthma
 Athlete's Foot
 Burns
 Chicken PoX
 Cuts
 Cystitis
 Depression

Introduction

Aromatherapy, treating skin conditions, soothing muscle

inflammation… the benefits of essential oils abound.
"Essential oils can be used in personal care products, in
home cleaning products, for general well-being in the
context of emotional support, and many other ways. The
pleasant odours coming out from flowers, spices and many
trees are blisfull. The essential oil and also well-known for
many medicinal purposes. And even some of them are anti-
depressentThe essence or aromas of plants due to volatile
oils present in them. These smelling volatile oils present in
plants are called essential oils. Cinnamon, clove, cumin,
eucalyptus, garlic, jasmine, peppermint, rose, sandalwood,
spearmint, thyme, wintergreen are a few familiar examples of
valuable essential oils. The term 'essential oils' literally
means 'oils derived from the essence' of plants.
Essential oils are mainly used for their pleasant odours and
flavors in perfumes and as a flavoring agents in foods. Some
are used in medicines (eg:-camphor, wintergreen, eucalyptus)
others as insect repellants (eg:-citronella). Chemically
essential oils are composed of complex mixtures of ester,
alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, and hydrocarbons.
They are essentially non-polar compounds and are thus
soluble in non- polar solvents such as petroleum ether,
benzene etc. Essential oils may occur in all parts of the plant,
but they are often concentrated in the seeds or flowers. They
are obtained from the plants by the process of steam
distillation and extraction.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

This journey of working on this project was very

interesting and refreshing. I was able to make this
project under the guidance and ackhnowledgement of
chemistry teacher ‘Mrs. Ratnadeepa Mam’ and also I
am very blissful to principal ‘Santhosh Kumar Sir’ who
guided me throughout this project in every possible
way. An investigatory project involves various difficult
lab experiment ,which have to obtain the observations
and conclude the reports on a meaningful note. I find
this topic to be the most intriguing extra-study part..
Rigorous hard work has put in this project to ensure
that it proves to be the best . I hope that it proves to be
the best.
