CFM56-7B MCD System
Scavenge Screen Plugs
• FWD Sump: Engine bearing #1, #2 or #3
• AFT Sump: Engine bearing #4 or #5
• AGB & TGB Sump: AGB or Starter bearings
– Starter has separate magnetic plug

• Do not disregard any MCD findings

• Ensure that engine sump and plug location is properly identified
• Use technical supporting publication (NDTM) and decision aid tools
• Share MCD findings with your dedicated CFM representative
• Send particles to lab for analysis

Key Factors to consider before Action
Decision for action must be driven by key factors:
Debris Examination References
 Visual aspect (shape, color, plated or not, • Applicable Aircraft Maintenance Manual
laminated … ) TASK 79-00-00-200-804-F00 - Chip
 Nature (magnetic or non-magnetic) Detectors and Scavenge

 Size, quantity • Screens InspectionCFM56 Non-Destructive

 Oil sump source (CFMI-TP-NT.11)
Engine history • Boeing Programs Field Guide for Lubrication
System Debris
• Low time/cycle engine since new or overhaul
• Recent engine squawks
• Maintenance report (past MCD findings, oil
circuit contamination … )
• Engine trend shift (vibes, oil consumption… )

Visual Characteristics Bearing Distress
Any bearing debris identification, either visually or by laboratory analysis, is
cause for immediate concern
Following visual characteristics can be helpful in distinguishing bearing
material
• Many chips of similar size and shape
• Magnetic material
• Smooth, reflective (silvery) surface on one or both
sides
• Roughly circular or elliptical flakes (platelets),
thinner around edges
• Material that is hard and brittle
• Metal chunks as small dark irregular particles
• Pieces of bearing cage material
• Chunks of silver plated steel

CFM Guide Lines- Magnetic Particles
How to identify quickly, Serviceable Particles: No Case Required
Less than 0.1mm: FUZZ

Often easier to remove and

clean particles to determine size

Correct particle interpretation required to avoid engine/AGB/TGB

unjustified removal
