Dear Sir/Madam,

I write this letter to express my interest in receiving funding for the University Summer
Courses in Germany for Foreign Students and Graduates. I am a postgraduate student
currently enrolled in the full-time MA in Comparative Literature in King’s College,
London. I was born in the city of Puebla, in Mexico, and did my Bachelor in Philosophy, at
Universidad Panamericana, in Mexico City, graduating as the first of my class, with a final
result of 9.4/10.

Thanks to my academic achievements, I was awarded two scholarships to pursue my

postgraduate studies in London, without which I wouldn’t have been able to finance the
total costs of tuition and living fees. BecasMOB, a private funding body in Mexico, granted
me a $20,000 USD scholarship towards tuition, and Goodenough College, a residence and
charity, awarded me a £4,000 scholarship towards living fees.

Ever since doing my undergraduate studies, I have been interested in learning the German
language. I’m interested in studying the tragic in literature, a topic that has been widely
explored by German speaking writers and philosophers, such as Schiller, Schelling, Hegel,
Nietzsche, Hölderlin, Benjamin, Szondi and Steiner, among many others. I’m especially
interested in reading German speaking authors in their original language, since literary
studies require a close understanding of the particularities of each language. In the long-
term, I plan to pursue a PhD in Germany, specializing in the field of Comparative
Literature. For my doctoral research, I intend to follow Peter Szondi’s work related to the
study of tragedy, in his Essay on the tragic (Versuch über das Tragische,1961), using a
philosophical framework to build a notion of the tragic relevant to literary criticism.

The DAAD scholarship represents a unique opportunity for me to continue improving my

German skills and eventually be able to apply for a PhD in the following years. To achieve
this goal, I have enrolled in German classes at King’s College’s Modern Language Centre,
reaching level A2 in two months. At the end of the language course, before the summer
course in Germany, I expect to reach level B1. Without DAAD funding, I won’t be able to
study a language course in Germany, since my scholarships only cover the basic costs for
my studies and living fees in London.

As my first option, I have chosen the Summer Courses that start in June, right after my
German course in King’s College has ended, so I can continue practicing my language
skills. My first choice of course is designed for German university applicants, and will
prepare me to develop the necessary skills for studying in Germany. Additionally, it takes
place in the city of Berlin, which offers a unique opportunity to learn about German history
in direct contact with many landmarks relevant for world history. In second place, I have
chosen the course imparted at Leipzig; and finally, I have chosen the summer course at
Dresden.

Kind regards,
Jose Alfredo Walls Gomez
