RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter is a presentation of the methodology and procedure employed by the

researcher in order to achieve the goals of the study. It includes explanation on the research

methods and procedure, and also the statistical tools used in the treatment of the data.

Likewise, the kind and sources of data gathered and manner of organizing and interpreting

them are also presented.

Research Design

This study is a descriptive-survey method done by the researcher in attempt to study

the level of competencies on information and media literacy.

The descriptive type of research gives to describe the nature and pattern of a situation

as it exist at the time of the study that discussed descriptive research as a collection of data in

order to test hypotheses answering the problems of the study. Survey method, is

the sampling of individual units from a population and associated techniques of survey data

collection, such as questionnaire construction and methods for improving the number and

accuracy of responses to surveys.

The data of this study was taken from response of criminology student in University of

Saint Anthony, Iriga city for the school year 2019-2020. But since the population of the

respondents is too huge, the researchers will be using the Sampling Technique that refers to a

process of selecting respondents or people to answer questions meant to yield data for a

research.

Research Instruments and Data Gathering Tool

The major instrument used to gather the essential information of this research will be

the survey-questionnaire based on the specific questions in the statement of the problem.

Questionnaire. This study made use principally of a questionnaire for the gathering of

data. The researcher prepared sets of questionnaire based on the problems of the study. It is

also the basis structure of prepared and distributed materials to assure responses to certain

questions. The question is accuracy intended to envision information about the conditions to

which the respondents presumed to be knowledgeable of the researchers prepared

questionnaire to acquire useful information to complete the study. The survey questionnaire

about the level of competencies on information and media literacy to the data gathering,

identifying false information, dissemination of media and information messages and problem

solving skills.

Preparation of the Questionnaire. In preparing the questionnaire, the researchers

reviewed some literature and studies which have some bearing on the chosen research

problem. The draft of questionnaire was submitted to the adviser for comments and

suggestions.

Validation of the Questionnaire. After consideration of the comments and

suggestions of the adviser, the new questionnaire was shown for the thesis committee so that

they can review and give critical suggestions in order to determine its appropriateness and

reliability.

Administration and Retrieval of the Questionnaire. Before the distribution of

questionnaire, the researchers formally asked permission to the school administration for the

distribution of the questionnaire to the respondents. The researcher chased the cooperation of

the respondents to answer the questionnaire during their free time.

Documentary Analysis. In the administration of questionnaire, the researchers made

use of a short explanation to the respondents on the main objective of the study and brief

orientation on the contents of the questionnaire. The accomplished questionnaire was collected

right away after the respondents had finishing answering it. The retrieval rate of the

questionnaire was 100%. After all questionnaires were retrieved, the data were tailed and

measured statistically. Thus, the data for the respondent and dependent variables were

subjected to analyses and interpretation.

Statistical treatment of data

The responses of the respondents were classified and tabulated systematically according

to different variables included in the study. All data gathered were presented quantitatively. The

statistical tools to be used are the following:

Slovin’s Formula. In order to get the number of respondents, calculate the sample

size (n) given the population size (N) and a margin of error (e).

The formula is:

𝑁
𝑛=
1 + 𝑁ⅇ 2

N= Population size

n= sample size

e= margin of error

Percentage Technique. In order to determine the respondents’ nominal data, this consists of

the raw counts of the frequency’s occurrence of the characteristics under consideration.

Ordinary data/ treatment was based on the frequency through the percentage formula.

The formula is:

𝐹
P= × 100

Where: P = Percent

F= Frequency

N= Total number of Respondents

Weighted Mean This was the technique used to get the mean of the level of

competencies on Information and media literacy. The weighted mean was utilized to quantity

the data and make the interpretation more objective.

The formula is:

𝑇𝑊𝐹
WM =
𝑁

Where:

WM= Weighted Mean

TWF= total weighted frequency

N= number of respondents

Five Rating Scale. The Liker-type scale was used in quantifying and interpreting the weighted

mean for each indicator, consisting of the following interpretations shown in Table 1.

Scale Interval Verbal Interpretation

5 4.20-5.00 Highly Effective

4 3.40-4.19 Effective

3 2.60-3.39 Moderately Effective

2 1.80-2.59 Less Effective

1 1.00-1.79 Least Effective
