THE PRESENT PERFECT TENSE is used to express -


1. Actions started in the past and continuing in the present
They haven't lived here for years.
She has worked in the bank for five years.
2. When the time period referred to has not finished
I have worked hard this week.
It has rained a lot this year.
3. Actions repeated in an unspecified period between the
past and now.
They have seen that film six times
It has happened several times already.
4. Actions completed in the very recent past (+just)
Have you just finished work?
I have just eaten.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE FORM


The present perfect of any verb is composed of two elements : the auxiliary verb -has or have plus the
past participle of the main verb.

A. Ordinary Form has/have + verb in past participle


Rocky has woven a baskets made of water lily.
Mila and her friends have advertised the water lily basket online.
B. With time expression
We have just received inquiries about the baskets online.
Family and friends have visited the basket gallery recently.
C. Progressive Form has been/have been + V-ing
Mr. Flores has been supporting this community project for a year now.
The members have been looking for more sponsors to continue the project.

Write the approriate auxilliary verb and the past participle of the verb given. Plot the subject and your
answers on the chart.

PRESENT PERFECT TENSE in NEGATIVE STATEMENTS

Add NOT in between the auxillary verb and the main verb or use NEVER. You can also use NOT with
the time expression YET.
Ex. I have not been to Hongkong.
I have not been to Hongkong yet.
I have never been to Hongkong.

EXERCISE C. Change the following affirmative sentences to negative present perfect in three ways.

PRESENT PERFECT QUESTIONS


When present perfect is used in interrogative sentences, the verb comes first before the subject. You
have to identify the number of the subject first so you’ll use the approprite auxillary verb.

Ex. Has she attended a party?


Have they ever eaten a crocodile dish?
