A bent pencil is not nearly possible to see except in toys but that can
happen only in Physics with refraction of light rays from the pencil
partially immersed in water. The refraction causes an apparent shift in
the position of part of the pen
Have you ever wondered why water looks shallower than really it is?
Nature actually developed an extra protective cover using refraction to
minimise its exploitation. The refraction of light at the surface of water
makes ponds and swimming pools appear shallower than they really
are. If you look at a stick that is poking into some water at an angle the
stick looks bent because of refraction. The bottom of the stick seems to
be nearer the surface of the water than it really is. It also explains why
flat-based swimming pools appear to get shallower as you look towards
the end furthest from you.
A marble of refreshing colours is bounded with liquid in a glass sphere.
. As the ray from the marble is made to move from the liquid medium
to the air, the ray gets refracted and the marble is made to appear closer
than it really is. Refraction acts and enlarges the marbles to give
astonishing paper weights
THEORY:
Travelling microscope is a compound microscope that is fitted on the
vertical scale. It carries a vernier scale along the main scale and can
be moved upward or downward. Below is an experiment to
determine refractive index of a glass slab using a travelling
microscope.
Aim
To determine refractive index of a glass slab using a travelling
microscope.
Materials Required
Theory
The principle behind glass slab
When a glass slab is placed on a horizontal surface, and its bottom
surface is viewed from the top, due to refraction, it appears to be
elevated. The apparent thickness of the slab is determined from the
distance between the apparent bottom and the top of the glass slab.
The refractive index with respect to the medium and air is given as:
n=real thickness of the slab apparent thickness of the slab
