STATIVE VERBS

Some verbs show a permanent state not an action and are not used with PRESENT
CONTINUOUS. These are:

VERBS OF APPEARANCE: appear, look, seem
VERBS OF THE SENSES (used to express involuntary actions) (feel, hear, see, smell, taste)

VERBS OF POSSESSION: belong to, have, own
VERBS OF MEASUREMENT: cost, equal, measure, weigh
VERBS OF THINKING, OPINION (know, notice, realize, remember, think, understand)

ΡΗΜΑΤΑ ΣΚΕΨΗΣ, ΑΠΟΨΗΣ (know, notice, realize, remember, think, understand)

VERBS SHOWING LIKE OR DISLIKE (dislike, hate, like, love, not mind, prefer)

ΡΗΜΑΤΑ ΑΡΕΣΚΕΙΑΣ Ή ΔΥΣΑΡΕΣΚΕΙΑΣ (dislike, hate, like, love, not mind, prefer)
OTHER VERBS ( need, sound, want)

ΑΛΛΑ ΡΗΜΑΤΑ (need, sound, want)


EXCEPTIONS - ΕΞΑΙΡΕΣΕΙΣ
Some of these verbs can be used in PRESENT CONTINUOUS but there is a change in meaning
and they describe actions not states

Κάποια όμως από αυτά τα ρήματα μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν και με τον PRESENT
CONTINUOUS αλλά αλλάζει η σημασία τους. Περιγράφουν πια πράξεις και όχι καταστάσεις
The cat feels soft. (feel=έχω συγκεκριμένη She’s feeling the baby’s forehead.

Do you see the castle over there? (see=βλέπω) I’m seeing Tom this afternoon. (see=συναντώ)
That cheese smells horrible! (smell=μυρίζω The cat is smelling its food (smell=μυρίζω

He has a house (he possesses) We’re having a nice time (we’re enjoying
ourselves)
Do you like his new car? (is it nice?) How are they liking the party (are they
enjoying)
Ann is polite (her character is) Tom is being very impolite (he is behaving
impolitely)
