Question # 1
Suppose that you want to develop a software to appraise the performance of employees in
your company. Which option would you choose: in-house development, outsourcing where you
supply employee data to a third party or off-the-shelf software? Why?

In-house development-- If the company can provide the resources needed in terms of cost
and developers that will work on the development of the software. Also, communication will be easier
than with outsourcing option because all project teams will likely be in the same office and may even
already know each other. It also gives greater control over the software functionality by meeting your
exact specifications. In terms of long term commitment, when there is a need to fix or change in the
system it will be easy and quick to make. Afterwards when the development is done, the training and
support will also be less complex because you can get support from the individuals who have
developed this software inside your own company.

Question #2
Interview business people who participate in the purchase of the off-the-shelf software in their
organization. Review with them the criteria for selecting off-the-shelf software. Have them prioritize
list of criteria as they are used in their organization and provide an explanation of rationale for each
criterion’s ranking. Ask them to list and describe any other criteria that are used in their organization.

1. Automation – If a company offers a system to their company, the first thing that they
ask about the system is, “What is being automated by the system? What does it
compute and what is the process? What is the automated process being delivered?”.
The system should help the company in making their processes easier in order to
minimize effort and increase productivity in doing other important things. They
purchase systems when they have a specific process that needs to be automated.
2. Accuracy – The second question that they ask is, “Is the system accurate in terms of
tracking time?” All company has something called “deadline”. All of the work that
they do has a specific time that it needs to be done. The system should track time
accurately so that the works of the employee are delivered accurately too.
3. Development – The third question that they ask is, “What process does the company
need to develop?” A process that doesn’t need a paper to be done. For example, if an
employee needs assistance about their computer, the employee can e-mail the IT
Department instead of physically going to the IT Department.
4. User Friendly – The fourth question that they ask is, “Is the system user friendly? Can
the system be understood by a non-technical person?” Not all of the employees are
very good in using the computer. The system should be easier to understand that all
of the procedures that needs to be used are there.
5. Cost Saving – The fifth question that they ask is, “Is the system cost saving compared
to the normal process of the company?” If the system is automated, manual
processing will be minimized. Hence, it will reduce the cost that the company needed
to spend.

Question#3
Contact an organization that has or is implementing an integrated ERP application. Why did it
choose this design strategy? How has it managed this development project differently from prior large
project? What organizational changes have occurred due to this design strategy? How long did the
implementation last and why?

Based from the organization that we contacted, they said that they have innumerable reasons
why they chose implementing an integrated ERP application. They said this are the reasons why they
chose this strategy:
- No expertise in building or maintaining one
- No real interest in the benefits, only needs one for contractual reasons.
- Bad experience using in house dev team (slow, glitch, etc.)
- Stability
- Less liability
- Company image
- Deep pockets
- Compatibility
- Partnership
- More neat
One of the primary reasons that they chose this design strategy is because they have no
expertise in building or maintaining one and they said that this suite of software is neat to use. They
said that they also have bad experience using in house development team (slow, glitchy, etc.). Using
this design strategy also provides stability to their day-to-day business activities. They have
counselled and trained their employees on utilizing this application.
