My classroom will be laid out in a sort of u-shape meant to facilitate group discussions

and allow everyone to be able to face the board for lectures as needed. My room is 30x30 with
30 desks for every student. In situations where I want to have a full class discussion, desks will
be moved into an O-shape so that all students are able to see and hear one another. I decided to
create this layout as it allows for easy access to every desk, allows room for the teacher to move
about while they lecture and is an easy setup for students to talk amongst themselves. I believe
this layout facilitates student-based learning as they are easily able to talk amongst themselves
and the layout leaves room for movement and can be adjusted based on the in-class activity.
Bulletin boards along the back wall of the class would feature a list of upcoming
assignments. The bulletin board to the front, left of the whiteboard would feature classroom rules
and procedures and the final bulletin board behind the teacher’s desk would feature a calendar
with important dates to remember for students. Along the walls, educational and motivational
posters will be posted to decorate the room and encourage students. All desks, including the
teacher’s, have wheels that allow for easy movement as needed. The lecture/discussion table is
an area for the teacher to sit to help facilitate discussion and allow students to feel like the
teacher is a part of the discussion, not just the leader.
Next to the teacher’s desk, the cell phone drop-off point is located to allow students to
drop off their cellphones as a way to mark themselves in attendance for class.
This cabinet is lockable so students can feel safe leaving their belongings. The teacher’s work
area is located at the front of the class, but the teacher will spend most of the time at the
discussion table when students are in the classroom. The discussion table is purposely closer to
students so the teacher can be fully involved in the lectures and discussions. A television is
placed behind the teacher’s desk as a way to watch morning announcements.
Storage lockers in the back of the class will house extra pens, pencils, paper and other
supplies available for students to use. The storage locker in the front is merely an extra storage
unit for the teacher. The turn-in table in the back of the class is a station for students to drop off
assignments that can be graded as well as an area to pick up any in-class worksheets that may be
applicable for the class period. The bookshelf towards the right side of the classroom will house
books related to history so students have an in-class library that allows them to complete
research and facilitates self-learning. Technology like the projector is placed over the discussion
table so that it can project onto the screen over the whiteboard.
The classroom layout is also accessible for students who need extra space as chairs can
easily be pulled out and moved. There is enough space around all desks to accommodate all
students. Students with hearing or seeing disabilities can sit in the seats closer to the front, near
the whiteboard and projector. If any additional special equipment may be needed, it can be stored
in the storage locker in the front of the class.
