SUMMARIZED, PARAPHRASED AND QUOTED

1.)Title: Where do people get their news?

Summary: News is the most important source of information about politics and public

affairs for most citizens, as few of us have any real personal contact with politicians. But

where do people in the UK get their news in the run-up to the General Election?

Research from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of

Oxford gives the answer and the answer is online and from television. The campaign is

therefore not only fought on the doorstep and the TV screen, but also increasingly on

the internet. This changing media environment provides the arena in which political

actors fight for our votes.Recent years have seen the gradual erosion of television as

the single most widely used source of news, to the point that by 2016 it has been

overtaken by online sources in terms of reach at least amongst the 92 percent of the UK

population who has access to the internet.

Paraphrased: The most importance source of information is news. Most citizen rely on

news to be updated on the world problems and issues. Research from the Reuters

Institute for the study of Journalism at the University of Oxford and the answer is on the

television and internet. The print has declined rapidly and social media has become

much more important (Nielson, 2017).

Quotation: According to Nielson (2017) “The reach of printed newspapers has declined

rapidly in the same period, and social media has become much more important.” As

social media rises in popularity, the print media starts to decline overtime. This explains

the wide and mass spread of information through the world, in this case, in the UK.

2.)Title: The Impact of Trust in the News Media on Online News Consumption and

Participation

Summary: The increase in the volume of information available online, together with the

emergence of new tools and services that act as intermediaries and enable interactivity

around the news, may have changed this relationship. Using Reuters Institute Digital

News Report survey data N = 21,524), this study explores the impact of individual trust

in the news media on source preferences and online news participation behaviour

particular sharing and commenting, across 11 countries. The results show that those

with low levels of trust tend to prefer non-mainstream news sources like social media,

blogs, and digital-born providers, and are more likely to engage in various forms of

online news participation. These associations tend to be strongest in northern European

countries, but are weaker elsewhere. Seeking alternative views and attempting to

validate the credibility of news may be among the motivations behind these

associations.

Paraphrased: As stated by Fletcher, R. and Park, S. (2018) Trust is the most valuable

variable in getting any information. But as time goes, as the information is more free and

more widespread. The “trust” that the people have and the “trust” to the information has

changed overtime. Statistics show that people are most likely to not trust the information

from blogs and posts from other individuals rather than getting their information from an

official news site and a popular site.

Quotation: According to Fletcher, R. and Park, S. (2018) “Trust has long been

considered an important factor that influences people’s relationship with news.

However, the increase in the volume of information available online, together with the
emergence of new tools and services that act as intermediaries and enable interactivity

around the news, may have changed this relationship” with the growth of fake news

surrounding the internet, trust has been a very crucial part of journalism in the internet

which makes it very difficult to know what’s legitimate and what’s not.

3. Title: A new understanding: What makes people trust and rely on news

Summary: For more than a generation, research has tried to identify the qualities that

lead people to trust news. It can be unclear, however, what these broad factors mean or

how news organizations can achieve them.Even more challenging, these traditional

conceptions of trust were formulated before the advent of the Internet and did not

account for all the ways that consumers today encounter news and publishers can

deliver it.A new comprehensive study, conducted by The Media Insight Project, shows

that trust and reliability in news can be broken down into specific factors that publishers

can put into action and consumers can recognize. The study also finds that in the digital

age, several new factors largely unexamined before such as the intrusiveness of ads,

navigability, load times, and having the latest details also are critical in determining

whether consumers consider a publisher competent and worthy of trust. The specific

factors that lead people to trust and rely on a news source also vary by topic, the study

finds.

Paraphrased: As stated by the American Press Institute (2016) People rely on the

types of news that they get according to the subject and the trustworthiness of the site

and its usefulness. There are factors that affect the reliability in news. According to the

Media Insight Project, the factors are also affected by the intrusiveness of ads,

navigability, load times, and having the latest details.

Quotation: According to American Press Institute (2016) People choose the types of

news they read according to the subject and the popularity of the site and its availability.

60 years and older still prefer the print media. People who are likely to use the digital

preference are mostly male and are younger than those who prefer print. It is also

stated that people who have more income prefer the modern style of journalism rather

digital subscribers are more likely to be male (59%) and are more likely to be younger

than the people who prefer print ’’More digital respondents have a college degree than

print respondents (77 percent vs. 64 percent), and those in the digital group also tend to

be higher-income, with 44 percent earning $100,000 a year or more.’’

what is wrong, not to mention that the accountability is readily determinable.Though

there are great hurdles along the way resulting from the vicissitudes of the modern

times, print media shall continue struggling to survive

Paraphrased: The materials used for the production of such products like magazines

and newspapers have hindered its production. People are now switching to online use

of advertising and spreading information. Social media and the internet has a high risk

of spreading fake and misleading information. Though this is happening, some people

can be so careless using the internet leading into misinformation. Like it or not, due to
the rise of technology, print media shall continue struggling to survive. (Pedroche, A.,

2018)

news on social media is so rampant and is even used as propaganda armaments of

certain people to malign the reputations of others.” The internet is such a dangerous

place where you can trust or not trust the information you are gathering. The use of

internet should be handled with care. The print media has been one of the most trusted

sources of information, though, it’s use has been on a decrease since the rise of online

journalism.

9.) Title: The future of news media

\Summary: One general observation is that there has been a growing decline in the

readership of traditional news. A Pew survey found that a majority of respondents spend

at least 40 minutes reading the local newspaper and often prefer the print over the

online edition. The recent Filipino-Hawaii Chronicles cover story, Newspaper Industry is

on Life Support by Edwin Quinabo, relates observations and opinions on the state of the

news media in this island state. One is the employment cutback where 15 newsroom

employees of a local newspaper were laid off that this was perhaps the sign of the times

in a beleaguered industry, he noted.

Paraphrased: The use of the traditional newspaper has been on a decreasing and has

been declining. The reasons are the rise of the internet and the change of taste and

behaviors of readers. Though, the newspaper will always remain on the surface but its

10. Title: Online Filipinos trust social media more than traditional media — poll
Summary: Filipinos online trust social media more than they trust traditional media, a

nationwide survey revealed on Tuesday. The fifth Philippine Trust Index (PTI) showed

more Filipinos who have access to the Intern;et trusted social media more than the

traditional media: 9 out of 10 Filipinos, or 87.3 percent, trust social media, while 7 out of

10, or 73.4 percent, trust traditional media. The survey, led by communications agency

EON, collected responses from 1,200 Filipinos aged 18 and above from March to April

2017. Among this pool was a sample of 600 “informed public,” or Filipinos who were at

least 25 years old with at least three years of tertiary education and tune in to news

updates at least twice a week. The poll noted that of the 1,200 Filipinos surveyed, 49

percent or 588 individuals have access to the Internet. Three out of 10 online Filipinos

or 29.3 percent have extreme trust in the new media, higher than the 2 out of 10 people

or 24.1 percent who have extreme trust in traditional media. Interestingly, more people

simply distrust traditional media than social media: 5 percent of online Filipinos

extremely distrust traditional media, far from the 0.5 percent of people who distrust

social media. The results were a bane for the press as it reflected the public’s

perception of the media’s lacking integrity, “This does not go well for media. And the

decline in the extreme trust in this institution underscores the importance of improving

the media’s reputation both from within and without,” he added. From 32 percent in

2015, extreme trust in the media fell 4 percentage points to 28 percent in 2017, the PTI

showed. But while social media has drawn more trust among online Filipinos, traditional

media — television, radio, and newspapers — remained as the most trusted media

channels among Filipinos in general, far surpassing the overall level of trust in social

media sites.
Paraphrased: The rise of the internet has massively affected the use of traditional

media outlets like newspapers and magazines even the use of television sets. In a

survey conducted, three out of 10 online Filipinos or 29.3 percent have extreme trust in

the new media, higher than the 2 out of 10 people or 24.1 percent who have extreme

trust in traditional media. This showed the trust of Filipinos in the internet has been

increasing through the years. (Ballaran, J., 2017)

Quotation: According to Ballaran, J. (2017) “Three out of 10 online Filipinos or 29.3

percent have extreme trust in the new media, higher than the 2 out of 10 people or 24.1

percent who have extreme trust in traditional media. Interestingly, more people simply

distrust traditional media than social media: 5 percent of online Filipinos extremely

distrust traditional media, far from the 0.5 percent of people who distrust social media.”

Filipinos have increasingly trusted the news in the internet than they have ever in the

past. Another quote by Mori Rodriguez, “However, while Filipinos generally perceive the

media to be skilled in the work they do, Filipinos, most especially the informed public,

find the integrity of the media lacking,” Rodriguez said.
